The Eastern Connecticut Conservation District, Inc, (ECCD) a nonprofit soil and water conservation organization, recently presented awards to several individuals
This year’s awardees were:
Tim and Lucas Young, earning the Farmer Cooperator Award for improvements conducted at Valleyside Farm in Woodstock.
Peter Boardman of Hampton and Betsy Mongirtes of Brooklyn were presented with a Muddy Boots Award for their participation in volunteer water quality monitoring work.
Liz Cartier, editor of The Pomfret Times was awarded the Community Journalism Award for assisting ECCD with outreach during a water quality investigation of Mashamoquet Brook.
Aubrey Waz of Pomfret, a student
at Woodstock Academy, was presented with the Youth Conservation Award for assisting with water quality monitoring and other volunteer efforts.
The Connecticut Audubon Society was presented this year’s Conservation Partner Award in appreciation of their support of ECCD programs. Sarah Heminway, director of Northeast Programs, received the award on their behalf.
Marvin Schutt of East Lyme was awarded the Watershed Support Volunteer Award in appreciation of his efforts on the Niantic River Watershed Committee.
Charlie Hobbs of Ledyard earned the Fundraising Support Award in recognition of his years of volunteer service at the annual ECCD Plant Sale.
This year’s Career Achievement Award was presented to Stanley Zaremba who recently retired from the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Bureau of Water Protection and Land Reuse.
In addition to the awards ceremony, Anne Roberts Pierson of Ledyard and Beverly Thornton of Brooklyn were newly elected to the ECCD Board of Directors as alternate members.
Officers elected to the ECCD Board of Directors are: William Jorsz of Sprague, board chair; Norma O’Leary of Thompson will serve as vice chairperson; Winthrop Benjamin of Preston, treasurer; Leonora Szruba of Lisbon, secretary.
