POMFRET — Sixteen years ago, Brad Seaward, assistant headmaster of The Rectory School, jumped at the opportunity to combine two passions of his: basketball and outreach. The result was Hoops for Hunger.
“Hoops for Hunger” is a free basketball clinic where the price of “admission” is a canned good to help families in northeastern Connecticut who need groceries. At the same time, the clinic satisfies the craving among Rectory’s varsity basketball players to be on the court, while providing the area youngsters with some game tactics and ball handling skills from these talented players. Mary Lou Seaward, Brad’s wife and Rectory teacher, said, “It’s a win-win-win situation.”
The clinics are from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Oct. 22, 29 and Nov. 5 at the Calhoun Gym on the school campus. It’s open to kids aged 8 through 13.
Daquon E., a ninth grader from Brooklyn, N.Y., is participating in his second Hoops for Hunger clinic this fall. “ It’s an opportunity to play a sport that I love while also having the chance to give back to my community. Knowing that I am helping other people out, it’s a wonderful feeling,” said Daquon.
