THOMPSON — Marianapolis senior Vanessa Wallace of Woodstock signed a letter of intent to attend Siena Heights University in Michigan next fall, where she will play in the starting line-up for the school’s lacrosse team.
The university, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), had just launched a lacrosse program, and its coach was seeking out experienced players. Wallace, who serves as goalkeeper for Marianapolis, will get a spot in the starting line-up.
Wallace began playing lacrosse at as a sophomore at Marianapoilis. Back then, said Wallace, “I never dreamed I’d be getting a scholarship to play in college.” But her statistics as a goalie speak for themselves, with an overall record of 249 saves in 2011 so far.
Wallace said she chose the school for its “strong academics and warm and welcoming campus,” and plans on studying pre-veterinary medicine.
Her parents Cindy and Steve are very happy and excited for their daughter. Marianapolis varsity lacrosse coach Dan Harrop described Wallace as “a determined and dedicated player. I’m excited that she will be able to continue to play in college.” Wallace is the first girls’ player to sign a letter of intent in the 10-year history of the Marianapolis girls’ lacrosse program.
