PUTNAM — The Mayotte-Viens American Legion Post #13 is remembering veterans with a Celebrity Bartender event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Someplace Special Restaurant. According to Post Commander Norman “Barney” Seney, Vietnam veteran and Putnam native Alan Joslin will be the special guest of honor.
This is second year that the Post has held the event.Last year more than $2,000 was raised in support of youth activities associated with the American Legion.
“The evening is our way of thanking any veteran from northeastern Connecticut who’s ever served their country.  It’s also an opportunity for the Post to raise some funds in support of local youth programs,” said Seney.
Former Red Sox catcher Roger LaFrancois, Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker and other  celebrities are scheduled to be on hand. Also scheduled behind the bar with Joslin are local radio personality Gary “O” of WINY Radio and Seney.
American Legion Pos # 13 supports the Tri-Town American Legion baseball program.  They annually send students to Boys and Girls State and the State Police Youth Academy.  Members of the Post also go to  schools presenting Americanism programs.  A portion of the proceeds will be designated to support the “Home at Last” project for homeless veterans. The home, which will house 18 units for veterans without homes, will be in Jewett City.
Joslin, a U.S. Navy veteran, was seriously wounded in Vietnam when the Jeep he was driving while transporting a fellow sailor to a hospital ran over a landmine.  Joslin injuries were so severe that he spent an entire year in the hospital.  His passenger succumbed to the explosion.
A graduate of Putnam High School, where he starred in baseball, Joslin spent four years in the Navy from 1966 to 1970.  He was honorably discharged as a 3rd Class Engineman E-4.
“Someplace Special is honored to host this event for the veterans.  Having celebrities on hand will certainly add luster to the festivities.  This is a special day and a special event.  We’re hoping to have a good turnout in honor of the men and women who have served and defended our freedom,” said Marine Corps veteran and Someplace Special manager Mike Vassar.
Working with Seney on the organizing committee are Legionnaires, Donald Steinbrick, Ron Coderre, Sarah Hamby and Rick Carnahan.
