PUTNAM --- Honor and happiness combined to inspire Michelle Verrilli of Pomfret to open Verrilli's Bakery & Ice Cream Shop on Church Street.
In 2010 Verrilli's father passed away and she said she wanted to "do something to honor his name and his hard work," she said. Her mother had passed away in 2007 and had never found her passion in life. Because she has had experience in the food business, opening a food-related business was the way to go. Verrilli said she picked doing a bakery and ice cream because it's a happy business, "it's a positive environment."
She opened Oct. 29 and is offering cookies, cookie bars, cakes, candy, light lunch items, homemade soups, salads, calzones, gelato and ice cream. She will add fresh breads. Verrilli also offers two floors of function space and can create wedding cakes and specialty birthday cakes, gift baskets for the holidays and can also help with event planning.
"The response has been great," she said. Customers who come in have "lots of positive things to say," she added.
Her parents would be proud.
