Taking part
DANIELSON —  More than 70 Quinebaug Valley Community College chemistry students participated in a contest to represent the college in the Chem 13 News Periodic Table Project, which was published in August 2011. QVCC Assistant Professor of Chemistry John Lewis and Chemistry instructor Mary Christian-Madden organized the project after they had applied and were selected by the University of Waterloo to participate. The college requested the element Seaborgium because Christian-Madden had met the Nobel Prize winning chemist in 1989, and also because it does not exist in nature. QVCC student Clay Merrill’s winning computer-generated design was selected by his peers.
The Chem 13 News Periodic Table Project celebrates the International Year of Chemistry in 2011. This collaborative periodic table was designed by chemistry students from all Canadian provinces and territories, 20 United States and 14 different countries. The periodic table is composed of artistic tiles to represent each of elements. QVCC is the only college from Connecticut to participate. Chem 13 News is an informal magazine published montly by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo.
