Marianapolis 2 Bancroft 8
Nov. 8: The girls’ varsity soccer team had another rough showing and they went home with a 2-8 defeat against Bancroft. With the recent trend of difficult losses rattling the confidence of our team, the girls played nervously and gave up three goals very early on. Such a situation is always difficult to come back from, but the Golden Knights didn’t give up. Instead they began to let go of their fears and instead played some good soccer. For a while there was lots of great ball movement, good communication and nice leadership out on the field, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to keep Bancroft from putting the ball in the back of the net. But, despite it all, there’s no doubt this team is a talented group of girls.
Pomfret School
Pomfret 1 Westminster 2
Nov. 9: The girls’ varsity soccer team squandered a 1-0 lead and let Westminster into the game in the final 15 minutes when they scored two goals within 2 minutes to take the lead and win the game. Pomfret played very well in the first half behind excellent combination play from L’Or Iman Puymartin, Caroline Kozlowski and Andi Nicholson. L’Or created the only Pomfret goal after beating her defender on the flank off a combination with Andi, and then slotting the ball to Caroline in the box who toe poked the ball past the keeper to put Pomfret up 1-0. Westminster had a few good chances off crosses in the first half but Pomfret was able to keep them off the board going into halftime. Pomfret played very uninspired soccer in the second half with no sense of urgency or determination to finish out the game. Consequently, they left the door open for Westy to fight their way back in. After a poor clear in our defensive third, Westy won the ball and found a free Ellie Deveaux who buried the ball to tie the score at 1-1. This gave Westminster the spark they needed and less than two minutes later found their freshman forward, Megan Richards 1v1 at the top of the box, who turned and fired the game winner past Mackenzie Dunphy. Pomfret finally stepped up in the final ten minutes with a flurry of activity in their attacking third, including a shot that hit the crossbar and a cross cleared inside the six but was unable to find the equalizer. It was a disappointing finish for Pomfret who moves to 8-3-3.
Pomfret 7 Walker 0
Nov. 12: The girls’ varsity soccer team ventured to Ethel Walker School and came away with a 7-0 victory. All of the members of the team saw good playing time and contributed to the solid win.
First to find the back of the net was L’or Iman Puymartin off a nice assist from Caroline Kozlowski. After being pulled down in the box, Alyson Chase would record the team’s second goal on a penalty kick that went top-right corner. Before the end of the first half, Andi Nicholson would make it 3-0 Pomfret on an assist from Morgan Lasewicz. Providing good support for the Pomfret strikers throughout the period were midfielders Jane Linhares, Cassie Hayward and Amanda Proulx.
In the second half, Kozlowski would put two behind the Walker goalie on assists from Carly Scott and Nicholson; Andi would also notch her second of the day off a nifty feed from Alison Horst. Strikers Izzy Regine and Kirsten Richards continued to put good pressure on Walker’s keeper, but the final tally of the game came on an “own-goal” given credit to Sorrel Perka. Morgan Lasewicz had produced a perfect ball through the box that a Walker’s defender inadvertently cleared into her own net.
Credit goes to Pomfret’s back four of Dejda Collins, Alyson Chase, Alida Bernhart and Val Di Lella. They collectively allowed only one shot to reach Mackenzie Dunphy; Kenzie recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
