PUTNAM — Stressing the importance of team play, the 2011-2012 edition of Putnam High School boys’ basketball, under the leadership of third-year coach Shawn Deary, prepares to embark on an ambitious conference and out of conference schedule.
The Clippers, who finished 10-12 overall last season and 3-6 in the CSC conference, are striving to improve on last season’s marks.  The goal of this year’s unit is to capture the CSC East Division regular season title and qualify for the postseason in the conference and state tournaments.
“We’ve set some ambitious goals for ourselves this season.  The coaching staff feels that if this squad can mold together as a unit and play a well rounded game at both ends of the court, the goals are achievable,” said coach Deary.
Putnam returns a quintet of experienced players who should make a difference between success and failure.  Leading the way is high-scoring senior guard Dino Porcic.  Last season Porcic, who returned to Putnam following a season at Putnam Science Academy, averaged a team-high 19.4 points per game.  There is no doubt that Porcic can fill the hoop with points but this season he’s being looked to for leadership and improved defensive play.
“We’re looking for Dino to maximize his potential this season.  There’s no doubt he can score, but with a
strong game at both ends of the floor he can become the real deal,” said Deary.
Joining Porcic is senior co-captain Chase Lessard, who is described by the staff as “the team leader.”  He’s complemented by another senior, 6-foot, 2-inch center Zach Simpson, who last season posted 11 points per contest to go along with eight rebounds a game.
The point guard position is expected to land with senior Caleb Gonyer, while another senior Gunnar Anderson, who was injured most of last season, is expected to add quality play on offense and defense.
Also expected to see action off the bench are seniors Brandon Roethel and Ramon Rogers; juniors Alec Fontaine and David Gazzola; and sophomores Joe Hill and Tyler Genest.
“This is a long and tall unit.  They’re very quick but will have to apply the quickness on the defensive end of the floor for a full 32 minutes to bring us success,” said  Deary.
The team opens the season against CSC opponent Platt Tech on the road then entertains Bethel on Dec. 23.  During the Christmas break they host the popular Citizens National Bank Clipper Classic, which this year will feature Ellis Tech, Killingly and Tourtellotte.  Games are scheduled for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 26 and 28.
“A key segment in the schedule that will go a long way in determining the heart of the team occurs in January when they play Classical Magnet, Capital Prep, Prince Tech, Vinal Tech and University during a 12-day stretch.
“The CSC is a tough basketball conference.  How we play against the strong teams will not only prepare us for the tournament but will give us an indication of just what we’re made of,” said Deary.
Assisting Deary with the coaching duties are varsity assistant Dennis Deary, junior varsity coach Brandon Kress and freshman mentor Ryan Walsh.  Senior Ryan Rumrill returns as the team’s scorekeeper and statistician.
Team unity from top to bottom will mark the difference between winning and losing for the Clippers.  They have the talent to succeed if they share the rock and play strong D.
