Realization of the Regional Community YMCA is moving closer as Capital Campaign pledges and gifts received hit the $1.72 million mark.
The funding joins the $3 million commitment from the Newell D. Hale Foundation and a state of Connecticut grant of $3.74 million awarded a year ago.
The total amount raised so far is $8.465 million.
The cost of constructing the facility is estimated to be $13 million.
The goal of the community portion of the campaign is $2.5 million.  Now that 69 percent of the goal has been achieved, the remainder of the funds to be raised is expected to be completed during the public phase of the campaign.
“Our team of more than 60 volunteers has been working tirelessly in contacting potential donors.  We’ve been extremely pleased with the response to
our requests.  With the campaign target now well in sight, we’re moving forward at a rapid pace with the public phase of the campaign,” said Campaign chairpersons Dr. Garfield and Sylvia Danenhower.
When the $9 million threshhold is hit, the design phase starts, according to Greater Hartford YMCA officials. When the $10 million mark is hit, construction will begin. Construction is slated to take 14 months. The YMCA of Greater Hartford will provide the final support of $2.5 million.
“It’s been very exciting to witness the support this project has received in northeastern Connecticut.  When completed, the Regional Community YMCA will be available to all segments of the area’s population.  I know from meeting with many folks in the area that they are anxious to see the project completed,” said James O’S. Morton, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Hartford.
The Regional Community YMCA is planned for construction on 15 acres of land donated to the Town of Putnam by Wheelabrator, Inc., in the proposed Quinebaug Technical Industrial Park.
Working in the Campaign Cabinet with Dr. and Mrs. Danenhower and Kelly are Attorney Thomas A. Borner, chairman of the corporate and financial division, Nancy Weiss, chairperson of the major gifts area, Dr. Marc and Attorney Kate Cerrone, chairpersons of the community division and Delpha Very, chairperson of the social and donor relations division.UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat are serving as Honorary Chairpersons for the campaign.
