Steven J. Budny Sr.,
WWII vet
PLAINFIELD — Steven J. Budny, Sr., 93, of Windsor Avenue, formerly of Quinebaug, died March 17, 2012, in Day Kimball Hospital. He was the husband of the late Veronica (Jarvis) Budny and the late Gertrude (Rock) Budny.
Born in 1918 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Budny.
Mr. Budny served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII and then went on to work as a bakery supervisor for Superior Bakery. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and a life member of the Moose Lodge.
He leaves his son, Steven Budny Jr., and his fiancée Elizabeth Robishaw of Westerly, R.I.; daughter Debra Budny of Knoxville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was predeceased by his daughter, Christine Hastreiter.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. March 30, with a Funeral service at 8 p.m. in Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale. Burial with military honors will take place at a later date in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Cohoes, N.Y.
Diane ‘Dee
Dee’ Anderson
WOODSTOCK — Diane “Dee Dee” M. Anderson, 66, of Woodstock died March 23, 2012, at home. She was the wife of the late Carl G. Anderson who died in 1999. Diane was born on Aug. 17, 1945, in Williamsport, Penn., daughter of the late Charles P. and G. Marie (Beiter) Shooter. She graduated from Tourtellotte Memorial High School in 1963. Together with first her husband, then her son, Steven, she co-owned and operated Carl’s Service Station, Inc. in Quinebaug.
She leaves a daughter: Terri L. Warren (Richard) of Eastford; son: Steven C. Anderson (Melinda) of Woodstock; sisters: Carol Walberg of Woodstock, Katherine “Kitty” Koss of Woodstock, a brother: Dennis Shooter of Columbia; four grandchildren, Andrew Warren, Travis Anderson, Lucas Warren and Michaela Anderson. She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Shooter.

Maurice D. Vincent,
Vietnam vet
PUTNAM — Maurice D. Vincent, 62, of Putnam died unexpectedly March 24, 2012, at home. He was the husband of the late Eleanor Vincent who died in 2011. Maurice was born in Central Falls, R.I., on Oct. 5, 1949, son of the late George Vincent.
He was a Vietnam veteran serving with the U.S. Air Force. Maurice was employed by U.S. Button for 15 years and enjoyed fishing.
He leaves a son: David Vincent of Putnam; two brothers: Roger Vincent of Pawtucket, R.I., and George Vincent Jr. of Virginia; a step brother, John Cavanaugh of Woonsocket, R.I.
Burial will be later. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.
Hazel M. Tarr,
former teacher
PUTNAM — Hazel M. Tarr, 87, of Putnam died March 22, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital. The wife of Albion Tarr, they were married for 61 years.
Hazel was born on Dec. 18, 1924, in Augusta, Maine, daughter of the late James and Nora (Adams) Devereaux.
She worked as a school teacher at Thompson Elementary School for 25 years. Hazel enjoyed square dancing, baking, embroidery and loved to read.
She leaves her husband: Albion; a daughter Sally Lamiotte-Tarr of Killingly; two sons: Albion “Sonny” Tarr Jr. (Paula) of Dayville, James Tarr (Sandra) of Thompson; four grandchildren, Jamie Tarr, E.J. Lamiotte, Dawn Dumas, Melissa Frechette; three great-grandchildren, August Frechette, Christine and Layla Reynolds.

Russell E. Deskus,
father of 3
PUTNAM — Russell E. Deskus, 66, of Putnam, went home to the Lord March 15, 2012, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born Feb. 22, 1946, in Hartford, son of Walter G. Deskus Sr. and Blanche J. Deskus. He was the husband for 41 years to Paula Tetreault Deskus. Together they raised three children, Shelley Fauxbel-Renaud of Woodstock, Rusty P. Deskus (Michelle) of Woodstock and Angela R. O’ Conner (Michael) of Woodstock.
Russell spent most of his childhood growing up in Stafford Springs. He served eight years in the Air Force Reserves. After meeting his wife, Paula, they moved to Putnam to raise their family. Russell was employed for 41 years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and retired in June of 2005. He had a love of the outdoors, hunting with his son, fishing with his son and grandchildren and just enjoying the great outdoors with his family. He took great pride planting his vegetable garden every spring and tending to his fruit trees, and with that, came along riding his grandchildren around on his “Big Blue Tractor”. Russell also looked forward to spring when it was time to open up the summer camp on Pond Factory in Woodstock, where he and Paula spent the past 17 summers. He also enjoyed playing cards whether it was at the casino or a good ole family card game. He was always willing to give the shirt off his back.
In addition to his wife and children, he leaves nine grandchildren, Tyler and Ashley Fauxbel, Haylee and Zachary Renaud, Kayla and Colleen Deskus and Molly, Aidan and Colbie O’Connor; nine brothers and sisters: Robert Deskus (Patricia) of Mystic, Walter Deskus Jr. (Judi) of Wells, Maine, Patricia West of Hampton, N.H., George Deskus (Pat) of Stafford Springs, Ann Backofen (Charles) of Wauregan, William Deskus (Joanne) of Stafford Springs, Beverly French (Joseph) of Berwick, Maine, Lorraine French (John) of Willimantic, Henry Deskus of Michigan.

PUTNAM — Jeanne L. (Buck) Mattie, 88, of Creamery Brook in Brooklyn, formerly of Limerick, Maine, and Abington, Mass., died March 24, 2012, in Matulaitis Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Francis N. Mattie.
Born in 1924 in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Milford and Jeanne (Wallet) Buck.
Mrs. Mattie worked as an assembler for the Foxboro Company in E. Bridgewater, Mass. She loved square dancing, baking and decorating cakes, building jigsaw puzzles, reading, sewing and, most recently, playing bingo at Creamery Brook.
Jeanne leaves her son, Roy “Jimmy” Perkins of Oceanside, Calif.; daughters, Louise “Sandy” Perkins of Los Angeles, Marie F. Capone of Auburn, Maine, Linda J. Mattie of Rockland, Mass., Gail C. Dussault of Woodstock; brother Jean Buck of Norwood, Mass.; sisters, Elizabeth Seales of Concord, N.H., and Mildred Wishart of Falmouth, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen E. Wolcott and brother, Lucien Buck. Visitation is from 2 to 4, March 30, in Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam. PUTNAM — Gertrude “Trudy” Gasiorek, 82, of Brooklyn died March 23, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital. She was born Jan. 3, 1930, in Brooklyn, daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Kopecki) Pester. She was the wife of the late Rudolph A. Gasiorek; who died Oct. 8, 1983. Mrs. Gasiorek was a 1948 graduate of Killingly High School. For seven years, along with her husband Rudy, she owned and operated the former Wildwood Park Restaurant in Dayville, followed by 14 years as owners of the Stables Restaurant in Putnam. For 13 years, along with her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Linda, they operated the Paddock Restaurant in Dayville.
She leaves her daughter Wendy L. Raymond of Hebron; son Wayne M. Gasiorek (Linda) of Pomfret Center; brother, Frank Pester of Adams, Mass.; sisters, Faye Clapp of Dayville, Frances Cipriani of Norwich and Victoria Moe of Norwich; grandchildren, Jeremy Raymond, Jeffrey Raymond, Andrew Gasiorek, Laura McKenna (Ryan).
The Memorial Service was March 25 at Tillinghast Funeral Home, Danielson. Donations: Charity of the donor’s choice.
