POMFRET --- December has been a busy month for the 14 students on the Community Service Team at Pomfret School. Throughout the year, under the guidance of Community Service Director Anne Richards, it is the Team’s mission to raise money to fill the food banks and support the efforts of two local community service agencies, Access in Killingly and TEEG in N. Grosvenordale. One of the team’s initiatives is the Concessions for Kids program, in which they raise money running the snacks and drinks concession at home hockey, squash and basketball games. But when the calendar page turns to December, toys and warm winter clothing also become a priority. For Richards and her team of sophomores, juniors and seniors, a wish list from Access for children in need was a call to action. Added to the many gifts donated by Pomfret faculty, students and families were the proceeds from a Concessions for Kids effort at Woodstock’s Hyde Cultural Center ‘s Dec. 8 production of "The Nutcracker."
With the nearly $500 raised, a special trip to the Target in Killingly, and the already donated toys they reached their goal of giving. Freshmen are given a different opportunity to make an impact. The December effort for the class of 2016 was the Holiday Mitten Tree, for which the group set a goal of collecting at least a hundred hats, gloves, mittens and scarves before the beginning of the winter break.
