PHS a cappella group shines
Putnam High School’s A Cappella group is making waves with its recent performances. The talented ensemble was featured as one of the distinguished performing groups at the prestigious Resonance A Cappella Festival Showcase 2025 March 8.
Putnam Clipper A Cappella spent the day participating in various vocal activities led by renowned clinicians. The day’s schedule included vocal exercise sessions, sound checks, one-on-one workshops, and a master class before the evening showcase.
During their 12-minute set, Putnam Clipper A Cappella performed “Happy” by Pharrell Williams (featuring soloist Olivia Hetrick), “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli, and “Dream On” by Aerosmith (featuring soloist Melanie Garcia). “Happy” was arranged by group member Isabelle Magalhaes, who said, “It was really great to be able to connect with old friends over music, and make new friends. Seeing my arrangement come to life was a surreal experience that I’ll be forever grateful for.”
Soloist Melanie Garcia said, “Being part of something bigger than myself allowed me to see just how important PHS A Cappella is to me. Without this group, Resonance could not be as exciting.”
Music director Skye Shogren said the festival was “an incredible opportunity for PHS A Cappella. We took the opportunity to go and share our sound, our connection with each other, the community and the culture that we have built, and put that up on stage. It was a priceless experience.”
Following their success at Resonance, the PHS A Cappella group demonstrated their versatility by performing the National Anthem at the O’Putnam 5k March 9, showcasing their vocal talents to the local community. PHS A Cappella is currently preparing for its upcoming spring concert on May 21.
