‘Inundation of eggs' a plus for Aug. 7 Food Share

PUTNAM — The Aug. 7 Danielson Veterans Coffeehouse Food Share will have 8 to 10 tons of food to be distributed, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Farmers Market Pavilion on Kennedy Drive.
Bruce Hay, coffeehouse vice president and Food Share leader, said in addition to the produce, possible breads or pastries and possible dairy that come in from Connecticut Food Share, he will be offering, this month, two dozen eggs per person. He said he got a call from Tim Kettle at Project PIN who told him he was “inundated” with eggs. 600 dozen.
In addition to this month’s eggs Hay said he is also getting, from Midwest Food Bank, boneless skinless chicken thighs. He said each person will get a 1 and one-half pound package.
In addition to that, also from Midwest Food Bank, he will have five “gaylords” (those giant bins you see in the market loaded with, for example, watermelons). One will have vine-ripened tomatoes; one will have broccoli; one will have cheese and two will have water.
When the Connecticut Food Share food arrives that morning, he must quickly assess what is in this month’s shipment and then calculate how many of what he can put in each bag for distribution, with the goal to make it “go all the way to the end,” stretch to the last bag given out.
He said when he arrives around 6 a.m. there are already eight or 10 cars lined up. The line stretches down Kennedy Drive and the food share opens at 9:30 and runs until all the food is given out.
Hay added that all are welcome. “Even if you don’t need food, you might know someone who does. Maybe they don’t have a car. Please feel free to come.”
The Food Share is a no-judgment zone.
