Scavenger Robotics wins Imagery
Award at regional competition
PUTNAM — Scavenger Robotics, the Putnam-based FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, is celebrating a major accomplishment: winning the FIRST Imagery Award, an honor that recognizes attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team appearance.
The team participated in a regional event held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute against 39 teams from across New England. Along with winning the Imagery Award, the team’s robot also performed well in qualifications, becoming the eighth seed and making it into the finals, before they were beaten by the number one seed.
The Scavengers have been working hard since the beginning of the year to prepare for this competition. The team is comprised of students from various schools in the northeastern Connecticut area, and these students dedicate a significant portion of their time to the activity during the competition season. In FRC, teams are challenged to build a completely new robot each year, one that is able to compete in a complex, action-packed game announced in January. Students have until their competition day to design, build, and program their robot to perform the specific tasks that the game requires. Through the FRC program, these students learn technical skills as well as teamwork, communication, and outreach.
Founded in 2016, Scavenger Robotics has steadily built a reputation for creativity, technical skill, and spirited presentation. Past accolades include an All-Star Rookie Award, a previous Imagery Award, and now a second Imagery Award joins their list of achievements. Their success serves as an inspiring reminder that robotics is as much about creativity and identity as it is about engineering precision.
With momentum from this award, preparations are already underway for the 2027 season. Right now, the team is focused on expanding their program by building the skills of their current students, recruiting new members, and obtaining sponsors to support their next season. The team accepts all students from the area, regardless of school or experience level.
