A preview of a World War II historical exhibition developed by the Aspinock Historical Society will be presented at the next Veterans Coffeehouse on May 26. According to presenter Amy Chizen, the exhibition will be officially unveiled in Putnam on May 31 but attendees at the Veterans Coffeehouse on May 26 will get a first look.
Chizen is a member of the Coffeehouse advisory board and the Historical Society.
She explained that the exhibition was developed to recognize and celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The exhibit includes WWII artifacts and a DVD of the WWII Museum in Natick, Mass., plus displays of personal historical items donated and loaned by families of veterans who served in the war.
Chizen said the Aspinock Historical Society has collected photos and biographical information on most of the 34 Putnam citizens known to have been lost in WWII and incorporated this into the exhibition.
Now in its second month of operation, the Veterans Coffeehouse attracted 39 veterans at its most recent event on May 12 to hear guest speaker Jeannie Gardiner, a Veterans Service Officer from the state Dept. of Veterans Affairs.
She has committed to return on May 26 to continue personal counseling of veterans to discuss benefits issues.
The Veterans Coffeehouse meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Killingly Community Center, 185 Broad Street, Danielson, from 9 am to 12 noon.
It is sponsored by the RSVP program of TVCCA. Please contact Greg Kline, RSVP Coordinator, at 860-774-9286 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for further information.
The Aspinock Historical Society will sponsor the World War II exhibition and commemorative activities throughout Putnam over the next few months.
