NOTICE OF INTENT TO FILE

FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The Town of Pomfret proposes to file an Application for Federal Financial Assistance with the USDA, Rural Development.  This application for financial assistance will be for funding under the Rural Utilities Service, Part 1780, Water and Waste Loans and Grants (CFDA 10.760) and is anticipated to be submitted by April 24, 2015.  The specific elements of the project is the construction of a sanitary sewer force main to serve the Rectory School, Pomfret School, and Loos & Co., and connection of sewer to existing sanitary sewer that is located in Putnam, CT.  The project is anticipated to cost $7,400,000.

Any comments regarding this application should be submitted to the Town of Pomfret within fifteen days of this publication.

INFORMATIONAL MEETING

An informational meeting will be held on May 4, 2015 at 6:30 PM at the Pomfret Community/Senior Center regarding the Notice of Intent to File for Federal Assistance as listed above.  This meeting will be held just prior to the Regular Selectmen’s Meeting scheduled for 7:00 PM on that date.  Any questions or concerns regarding this application under the Rural Utilities Service, Part 1780, Water and Waste Loans and Grants can be submitted to the Pomfret First Selectman’s office.

In the early goings of the girls’ softball season teams that have generally had difficulty posting victories are on the other end of the spectrum this year.  Woodstock Academy and Ellis Tech, two teams who often have tough seasons are surprising with great early season showings.  Tourtellotte, which is generally strong within its division, is also having a strong early season performance.

Plainfield, Putnam and Killingly are struggling below the .500 level, while the preps, Marianapolis and Pomfret School are having a tough time getting their acts together.

Acads and Eagles Post Winning Weeks

Woodstock Academy softball under coach Jason Gerum is witnessing a revival that has Centaur fans excited.  Rylee Hehir, who transferred to Woodstock from Marianapolis this year, has been a big reason for the early season success.  Behind the strong pitching of Angela Caponi and the hitting of Hehir, the Centaurs breezed past New London 15-0.  Caponi went the distance, striking out 12, while Hehir had a pair of doubles, scored twice and posted three-RBI.

Hehir took to the circle in a 4-3 win over Lyman and struck out 10 opposing hitters in leading the way to the hard fought win.  Caponi and Shannon Creedon each contributed a pair of hits for Woodstock.  In its final contest of the week, the Centaurs fell to Eastern Connecticut Conference – Large Division foe Fitch 12-6.  The Centaurs are 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the ECC – Large.

After beginning the week with a disappointing 10-9 loss to Windham Tech, Ellis Tech picked up a pair of satisfying wins to up its record to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Constitution State Conference – East.

The biggest victory was a 12-10 win featuring a 19-hit attack over the Putnam Lady Clippers.  The Eagles who scored in every inning were led by Liz Patton with four hits and four runs batted in.  Sydney Tetreault also had four hits for the victors.  Earlier in the week the Lady Techsters took the measure of Holy Family Academy 18-6 behind winning pitcher Kristin Light.  The quintet of Rhiannon Sulik, Sheridan Murphy, Tetreault, Patton and Sarah Tellier all had big days at the plate.

Putnam, despite losing to Ellis Tech, had an otherwise successful week, picking up a pair of wins.  The Lady Clippers opened with a 16-0 win over University Prep as pitcher Mackenzie Livingston posted a 10-strikeout performance.  Jada Thomas led the Putnam offense with two hits.  The Putnam offense continued to roll as it ran away from Parish Hill in a 19-3 five inning affair.  Livingston and Kira Clinksdale with two hits apiece were the hitting stars for Putnam.  The Lady Clippers closed out the week in disappointing fashion, being shutout by Griswold 15-0.  Putnam is 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the CSC – East.

Plainfield suffered through a losing week, being dropped 10-2 by Norwich Free Academy, 5-2 by Waterford and 17-2 by Montville.  The Lady Panthers are 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in the ECC – Medium.  Tourtellotte (5-3 and 1-1 ECC – Small) had a similar week, losing 8-2 to St. Bernard and 18-4 to Ledyard.  Killingly (2-5 overall and 1-2 ECC – Medium) also lost three times, 8-1 to Ledyard, 6-0 at the hands of Stonington and 13-9 to St. Bernard.  

Pomfret School evened its record at 2-2 with a narrow 12-11 victory over Kingswood-Oxford School.  Down to its final strike, Pomfret utilized the heroics of Makenna Newkirk’s walkoff double to drive in the winning run.  Newkirk and Cassie Hayward enjoyed a perfect day at the plate, both going 5-for 5.  In a game that went eight innings, the Griffs were beaten 9-5 by Cheshire Academy .

Marianapolis, struggling at 1-5, was soundly beaten by Westminster School 15-3.  The Lady Knights got back on the winning track, shutting out Westover School 5-0.  Caroline Lutz posted the complete game shutout.  Madison Bodreau and Christina Doherty each had a pair of hits in the winning effort.  

 

 

Legal Notice -- Town of Pomfret

 ANNUAL TOWN MEETING -- MAY 7, 2015

The legal voters and citizens qualified to vote in Town Meeting of the Town of Pomfret are hereby warned to meet at the Pomfret Community School Cafeteria, 20 Pomfret Street, Pomfret, Connecticut on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. to act upon the following articles:

Article 1: To choose a Moderator for said meeting.

Article 2: To see if the Town will consider and act upon the following resolution:  “Resolved” that the Board of Selectmen is hereby authorized and empowered to enter into an agreement with the Commissioner of Transportation and the Office of Policy and Management, State of Connecticut, for the expenditure of all Highway funds under the provisions of Chapter 240 and the expenditure of all Local Capital Improvement Funds under the provisions of Chapter 7-536, CT General Statutes, for fiscal year beginning July 1, 2015.

Article 3: To see if the Town will consider and adopt the Five Year Local Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal year 2015–2016 as proposed by the Board of Selectmen.

Article 4: To hear and act upon the report of the Selectmen, Town Treasurer, Treasurer of the Local School Fund, and Board of Education, as published by the Board of Finance, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.

Article 5: To see if the Town will accept the following cemetery funds for perpetual care: Abington Cemetery Association:  Joyce M. Bigelow, Grave #440, deTallyrand Annex, $100.00; John Williams, Jr., 3 Graves #169F, 169G & 169H, $300.00; and Pomfret Cemetery Corporation:  Peter B. Mann, Yard Three (3), Lot Thirty-Eight (38), $100.00; Jane F. Dunn, Yard Three (3), Lot Seventy-Five (75), $100.00; Richard J. Dunn, Yard Three (3), Lot Seventy-Six (76), $100.00; Melissa S. Beeler, Yard Three (3), Lot Sixty-Two (62), $100.00; Cheryl K. & Stephen M. Champ, Yard Three (3), Lot Seven (7) and Yard Three (3), Lot Seventy-Seven (77), $200.00

Article 6: To see if the Town will approve a special appropriation to the Board of Education in the amount of $39,000 to be used in the following manner: $9,000 of which to be used for a kitchen convection oven, $20,000 of which to be used for the replacement of cafeteria tables, and $10,000 of which to soundproof the Music Room.  Appropriation to be funded by monies available in the Board of Education Contingency Fund.  Said appropriation approved by the Board of Finance on April 13, 2015.

Article 7: To see if the Town will adopt a total appropriation in the amount of $12,493,764 for the 2015-2016 fiscal year budget with $2,562,088 of said amount to be the General Government Appropriation and $9,931,676 of said amount to be the Board of Education Appropriation, the same to be funded by estimated revenues as recommended by the Board of Finance.

Article 8 : To do any other business proper to come before said meeting.
