The high school ranks witnessed three schools left standing as the regular season came to an end. Tourtellotte remains as the highest local seed in the CIAC Tournament ranked #8 in Class S. On Friday the Lady Tigers hosted a Second Round game between the winner of the First Round game between Lyman Memorial and Classical Magnet in a contest played on Monday.
Putnam ranked #21 played a First Round Class S contest on Tuesday against #12 Housatonic Regional. In Class M #21 Plainfield was at #12 Coginchaug on Monday.
The prep school female hoop season came to an abrupt conclusion as Marianapolis was eliminated from the NEPSAC Tournament. Pomfret School had success as it won a semifinal NEPSAC Class B contest and reaching the championship game and raising its record to 16-5.
Season Closes with a Minimum of Action
Pomfret School took out its long range artillery in a quarterfinal NEPSAC contest as the Lady Griffins edged their way past a stubborn St. George’s 61-60. Mary Redmond and Alyzae Davis each knocked home four three-point bombs to pace the Pomfret win.
Coach Rebecca Brook’s team almost squandered a 36-27 halftime advantage as St. George’s posted a 33-point second half. A steal by Cassie Hayward with 10 seconds remaining iced the victory. Redmond finished with 23 points and Davis with 18 were the leading scorers for the Griffs.
In the semifinal contest the Lady Griffins fell behind early by a big margin, 26-13 at intermission, and won thanks to Nikki Derosier. With only three ticks left on the clock in regulation, Derosier, who scored only three points all game, stepped to the charity stripe and hit a free throw for the 52-50 game winning difference over Berkshire Academy.
Juliette Lawless was the big gun for Pomfret tossing in 21 points and grabbing a dozen rebounds, while her teammate Redmond accounted for 14 markers.,
Marianapolis traveled to Weston, Mass., where it ended its season on a down note, losing to Rivers School 81-74 despite placing four players in double figures. Sophomore Madison Springfield was the Lady Knights top scorer with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She was joined in double digits by Rachel Aho (14 points), and Caroline Soucy and Michelle Viselli each who chipped in 13 points. Jill Bodreau concluded a brilliant four-year career at Marianapolis with a 10-point performance. The Lady Knights closed the books on 2013/2014 at 15-7.
Ellis Tech’s season couldn’t come to an end quickly enough as they ended an 0-20 season with a 46-29 loss at the hands of Vinal Tech.
Scoring Leaders: Janicha Diaz – Hyde-Woodstock – 15.5; Meagan Bianchi – Killingly – 14.6; Ali Ablondi – Tourtellotte – 14.1; Juliette Lawless – Pomfret School – 14.1; Alyzae Davis – Pomfret School – 13.7.

Senior Ryan Pambuku, who’s been the catalyst behind the success of the Plainfield boys’ basketball program this season, was rewarded for his consistent play by being named the January Eastern Connecticut Conference Athlete of the Month. The award is presented monthly courtesy of the Byrnes Agency of Dayville, Norwich and Woodstock.
Pambuku surpassed the 1000-point career plateau with a 15-point effort in a Panther victory over Killingly on Jan. 10. During the month Pambuku scored in double figures in all 10 Plainfield games, for an impressive 24.8 points per game. His scoring heroics also included a career-high single game effort of 37 points on Jan. 10 against Stonington.
His high-octane month raised his season total to 440 points for 22.0 points per game average. He’s also helped coach Bob Arremony’s Panthers achieve an 11-9 overall record and entry into the Eastern Connecticut Conference Tournament. Plainfield has also qualified for the CIAC Tournament.
Pambuku has been receiving considerable attention from a number of colleges of late. He aspires to continue his basketball career next season on the collegiate level.
The female ECC Athlete of the Month Award went to East Lyme senior Jenna Schumacher, a standout on the Vikings women’s basketball team, who is headed to Amherst College to play basketball next season.
