Harry F. Clemence Jr., Vietnam war vet
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Harry Frederick Clemence Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M., 80, died Aug. 4, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer. Born Nov. 5, 1940, in New London, he graduated from Putnam High School in 1958. He was preceded in death by his father Harry F. Clemence and his mother Theresa (Shea) Clemence.
After completing an associate’s degree at Nichols College, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps as an aviation cadet and received his Naval Aviators wings in 1962. He served three combat tours in Vietnam, flying the UH-34D helicopter and KC-130F. Between 1964 and 1973 he earned 43 air medals, (860 combat missions) and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V”! His fourth overseas tour was with Amphibious Tacron Air Control on the USS Blue Ridge. Retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of major in 1982, he flew for Muse Air, Transtar Airlines, and the Continental Airlines until he retired in 2000. During his 38 years as an aviator, he flew 17 different aircrafts and loved every moment.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Eleanor (Schlueter) Clemence; daughter Megan Clemence of Albuquerque; his daughter and son-in-law Katherine and Randy Burger of Redding, Calif.; sister Judith Mansfield of Newhall, Calif.
He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
