POMFRET — For the only the second time in seven years, race day in Pomfret happened without rain! Cancelled last year due to the pandemic, this year’s “Camper-Scamper” race had some COVID-19 precaution changes put into place but was a successful real time, non-virtual race.
The racing community was delighted and 109 people registered for either the 1K or 5K race/walk. There was no” day of” registration, bibs were picked up the day before, masks and social distancing were required before the start, the start was staggered, race results were announced only electronically, and there was no mingling after the race.
Even so, it was still a real race with real people running nearby and staggered family members on the sidelines cheering for the competitors. Professionally timed by Last Mile Race Management, Maxwell Chase from Brooklyn was the overall winner with a time of 17:09. Second overall was Eric Ciocca from Northampton, Mass., and third was Christian Smutnick from Pomfret.
Camp Director Heather Logee said it was wonderful to once again see young people on the camp grounds and is eagerly looking forward to the start of the camp season on June 20.
COVID-19 precautions will make for some changes to in-person camp, but once again this year kids can enjoy “A Summer of Fun, A Lifetime of Memories” at the Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp.
