HARTFORD — A Putnam student, Elysse Britt, was a winner of this year’s CHET Dream Big! Competition and Advance Scholarship.
The CHET Dream Big! Competition asks fourth through eighth grade students wrote essays explaining how they will make a difference in their community or the world after college through their job, idea, or community service.
Britt interviewed Holly Gilbert, a cancer survivor and co-founder of Daily Bread, a local food bank. Britt was moved by Holly’s capacity for love, empathy and appreciation for others despite the difficulties she faced.
For the CHET Advance Scholarship program, first year high school students had the option to enter a civic engagement category or non-merit category.
As civic engagement winners, these students will receive a $2,023 contribution.
Students that participated in the non-merit category will receive a $1,750 contribution.
Both categories are eligible for a $500 match if the students save $500 before December of their senior year.

PUTNAM — The Putnam Business Association will hold its 2020 Pluck-A-Duck Raffle fund-raiser at noon Aug. 16. More than 4,500 rubber ducks will be released at a secret, duck pond location in Putnam and then “plucked” for a chance to win fantastic prizes.
The event will not be public but it will be broadcast live on WINY Radio 1350 am & 97.1 fm and the Putnam Business Association’s Facebook page.

Legal Notice is hereby given to the taxpayers of the Town and Fire District of Pomfret that the first installment of taxes on the Grand List of October 1, 2019, is DUE AND PAYABLE July 1, 2020. In April, the Board of Selectmen extended the 1-month grace period to 3 months for eligible taxpayers. Please go to pomfretct.gov for details of eligibility. For all eligible taxpayers and qualified landlords, the last day to pay without penalty is October 1, 2020.
Per State Statute, interest will be charged at 18% annually (1.5% per month), with a minimum charge of $2.00 per entity (Town and Fire District are separate entities) on all delinquent payments postmarked after October 1, 2020, with interest calculated from the due date of July 1, 2020 (6% interest.) For all escrowed taxpayers and unqualified landlords, the last day to pay without penalty is August 3, 2020. The first installment of taxes, due to the Town of Putnam, Special Service District, East Putnam Fire District and West Putnam District on the Grand List of October 1, 2019, is due and payable on July 1, 2020, through August 3, 2020, for real estate taxes of landlords approved for deferral and escrow, and October 1, 2020, for all other taxpayers (in accordance with Governor Lamont’s Executive Order 7S and 7W). Please review your bill for the proper “Last Day To Pay Without Penalty” date.
TO AVOID INTEREST CHARGES, MAIL MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN LAST DAY TO PAY WITHOUT PENALTY (AUGUST 3, 2020, FOR ESCROW AND NON DEFERRED LANDLORDS, OR OCTOBER 1, 2020, FOR ALL OTHER TAXPAYERS)
Payments made after the last day to pay without penalty will be subject to an interest charge of 3% (1.5% per month) or $2.00 minimum per Town and $2.00 per Special Service District, East Putnam Fire District and West Putnam District (where applicable), whichever is higher, according to Connecticut State Statute, Sec. 12-146.
