Grants to local food pantries
JEWETT CITY — The Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation recently granted $14,500 to nine local food pantries. The Friends of Assisi Food Pantry of Danielson received $2,500. Receiving $500 grants were the Town of Pomfret Food Pantry, Thompson Ecumenical Empowerment Group Food Pantry and Interfaith Human Services of Putnam Daily Bread Food Pantry.

Chzaszcz also received an award for Excellence in Television for work on Eastern’s ETV television station.

DUDLEY — Olivia Antonson of N. Grosvenordale was one of seven students from Nichols College to attend the North American Model United Nations Conference at the University of Toronto in February. Deborah K. Lucier
PUTNAM — Deborah K. (Roy) Lucier, 65, of Wilson Rd. died May 17, 2020, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.  She battled kidney and heart disease. She was the wife of 43 years to Gary Lucier. Born in 1955 in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late James and Jean (Cayer) Roy.
On Aug. 14, 1976, at Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret, Debbie was united in marriage to Gary Lucier
Mrs. Lucier worked for more than 40 years in patient accounts at Day Kimball Hospital.
Debbie enjoyed traveling to Maine and being on the water whether it be at Alexander’s Lake or the oceanfront. She always gave her all. She fought a fierce fight.
She leaves her husband, Gary Lucier; her two sons, Kyle Lucier (Sarah) who was Deb’s special and faithful caregiver; and Ryan Lucier and his companion Meghan Gregoire, all of Putnam; three grandchildren: Addison, Quinn, and Autumn Lucier; two brothers, Richard Roy (Marjorie) of Woodstock and Michael Roy of Owls Head, Maine; two special friends Donna and Tina.

Susan Gardner
GROTON, Mass. — Susan (Gorham) Gardner of Groton died May 15, 2020, after a brief illness in Massachusetts. Sue was born on Dec. 11, 1937, in Providence, the daughter of the late David and Arlene (Vallett) Gorham. She was a graduate of Lincoln School in Providence and Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.  Sue will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and love of a good laugh.
Sue shared her life with two husbands. She spent 35 years with David W. Parker (deceased), together raising four children. After 19 years in Foster, they settled in Pomfret, building a beautiful home on Hamlet Hill. They also spent many happy weekends at the Shoestring, their family camp in Vermont. Sue worked as a medical technician at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.
She shared her “Second Story” with William A. Gardner (deceased). They were married for 21 years in Orleans, Mass. On the Cape, they enjoyed Nauset beach year-round, hosting many visits of family and friends and took advantage of these years to travel extensively.
She was an avid reader, a talented crafter with an artistic eye. Her home included her hand-braided rugs, artfully arranged antiques and she always had a beautifully set table, even for simple meals. Sue was a gifted gardener.  She loved animals, from her chocolate labs to rescued raccoons, geese and more. Sue took great delight in the holidays and made Christmas special each year.  She was an active volunteer including serving as a Deacon at the Federated Church of Orleans.
Susan leaves three sons, Scott Parker (Tracy), Adam Parker and his fiancé Lisa Carter, David Parker (Susan); one daughter, Amy Farrell, wife of the late Dennis Farrell; a sister Abby Gorham, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and Will’s four children Greg, Leslie, Randy, and Gary.

Blanche T. Michael
PUTNAM — Blanche “Terry” (Baribeault) Michael, 80, of Sabin St., died May 15, 2020, at Day Kimball Hospital. She was the wife of the late Nekolas Michael for 39 years before he died in 2017. Born in 1939 in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella (Ethier) Baribeault.
Mrs. Michael worked as a laundry supervisor for Matulaitis Nursing Home.  She enjoyed watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and NASCAR.  She was a fan of Tiger Woods.  Blanche liked to spend her time knitting, crocheting and watching CNN and MSNBC. She took special care of her husband while he was sick.  She helped everyone; she was a giver not a taker.
She leaves her daughter, Denise Shippee (Thomas) with whom she lived in Putnam; and her son, Mark Blackmer (Adriana) of Pasadena, Md.; her stepchildren, Kevin Michael (Janet) of Dudley, Donna Michael of MA and Maryanne Regimbal, of MA; her sisters, Claire Elliott of Providence, Joan Mazzaia of FL, Julie Tague of FL; grandchildren, Megan & Tyler Shippee with whom she lived, and Melissa, Brian, Michael, Jessica, Brady and John Blackmer.  She was predeceased by her stepdaughter Tina Perrin and her siblings Alice Spinner, Evilyn Baribeault, Barbara Gagne, Lorrain Baribeault, Linda Baribeault, Raymond Baribeault and Earnest Baribeault. Albert Washburn II
POMFRET CENTER — Albie Washburn, born Jan. 27, 1950, in Hartford, died May 21, 2020, at Day Kimball Hospital from complications of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).  Albie was the only son of Albert F. and Ina (Sciavone) Washburn.
Albie graduated from Putnam High School and a post-graduate masonry program at Ellis Technical School. As an expert stone cutter, Albie worked for many masonry firms, including Rogerson Masonry, and was also self-employed.
Albie had a wonderful sense of balance, doing high-rise construction work and ice-skating backwards. Many a lady can attest to his enthusiastic moves on the dance floor, where he managed to induce two pregnant women into labor and accidentally removed the sleeve of one woman’s fur coat.  
Albie had a fine discernment for what is right, true and lasting. A fierce defender of underdogs, Albie passed his sense of fair play on to the children he coached in Pomfret Little League. A member of golf leagues in E. Putnam, Woodstock and Willimantic, golf was his passion.
Albie met his wife-to-be, Margaret (“Meg”) Kerensky, at a private Halloween party at the Vanilla Bean Café in 1990, where he was a wolf-man and she was a go-go girl. On their first date, listening to the bluegrass band Springwater at the Imperial Cinema, they found out they shared the same birthday, exactly 10 years apart. They were married by Alice Ramsdell, J.P., in a pine grove on May 23, 1992.
As a single father, Albie worked tirelessly to raise his son, Joshua Washburn, who takes after his dad by being patient, loyal, gentle, hard-working and affectionate. A vivacious percussionist, Albie took part in many musical jams and was renowned for wowing the ladies with his Tom Jones impersonation. Easy-going and creative, Albie was an artist, working mostly with field stone and found wooden objects. He claimed that the stones talked to him.
In addition to his wife and son, he leaves sisters Gail (Royce) Brooks and Terry Washburn; brother-in-law Butch Benway; grandsons, Nick and Colin Washburn; niece, Michelle (James) MacDonald, and nephews Artie Benway, Joe Miller and Nathan (Crystal) Adams. He was predeceased by his sister, Nina Benway. Predeceased by his best friend, Alfie Dyrland, and close friends, Kevin Kilborn and James Hillman, he leaves special friends Mark, Maryke and Dustan “Dayo” Schlehofer, Karen and John Dyrland-Weaver, Billy Wolchesky, Julia Schlough, Mike Burdett, Gary McNally, Kathy O’Leary, Al and Lynn Landry, Michael Nelson, and Arrik Kim.

Daniel T. Phillips Sr.
WEBSTER — Daniel T. Phillips Sr., 52, died unexpectedly April 23, 2020, at his son’s home.
He was born in Sept. 8, 1967, in Putnam, a son of Charles G. Phillips who died in 2006. He lived in Webster most of his life. Mr. Phillips was a truck driver.
He leaves his mother and stepfather, Hannah (Bienczak) Sachs and Maurice Sachs of Worcester; a son Matthew R. Coburn and his fiancé Laura Bilodeau of Plainfield; three other children; a grandson, Tucker Daniel Coburn; two brothers, Charles R. Phillips of Gloucester, Mass., and Adam F. Phillips and his fiancée Breanne Giard of Webster; four sisters, Rainbow McBride of Oxford, Cathlene Mahoney of Yucca, Ariz., Rebecca Fortin of Canterbury, and Alice F. Phillips of Woodstock. He was predeceased by a son Daniel T. Phillips Jr. in 2015.

Anne Kozlowski
WEBSTER — Anne M. (Scioscia) Kozlowski, 75, died May 10, 2020 at Hubbard Hospital.
Anne was born Aug. 4, 1944, in Worcester, daughter of Charles and Marjorie (Anderson) Scioscia.  Anne graduated from Oxford High School, not long after she met the love of her life and was married to Peter Kozlowski on Oct. 1, 1966.
Being predeceased by her husband of 33 years, the late Peter J. Kozlowski in 1999 and their son Peter J. Kozlowski I in 2016, she leaves her daughter Donna Keith of Griswold; her daughter-in-law Crystal Kozlowski of Thompson; five grandsons: Anthony Manuel, Jared Keith (Carrie), Nathan Kozlowski, Peter J. Kozlowski II, and Andrew Markvenus; two granddaughters: Samantha and Suzanne Demers, and their mother Dina Kozlowski; three great-granddaughters, and two great-grandsons.
