2 health centers get
federal grants
Two eastern Connecticut health centers last week received two federal grants totaling $129,195 to aid in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Congressman Joe Courtney announced the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services granted $65,444 to Generations Family Health Center Inc. in Willimantic and $63,751 to United Community Health Center, Inc. in Norwich.
“Our health care professionals are working on the front lines of this pandemic in health centers and clinics – they’re keeping our eastern Connecticut communities safe and healthy, and we’ve got to keep working together to support them,” said Courtney. “This federal grant program was authorized as part of Congress’s first bipartisan COVID-19 aid package, and these grant awards are another resource in our health centers’ toolbox – it allows them to immediately secure more resources to prevent, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19, from promoting prevention practices to training staff, to purchasing more Personal Protective Equipment like N95 respirators and hand sanitizer for health care personnel.”
The funds were dispersed through the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Local donations
of protective gear
Two local organizations donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to Day Kimball Healthcare and first responders.
The Woodstock Academy’s Health Services department, led by Bobbie-Jo Saucier, realized they had protective gear on hand. Because the students are now gone, Head of School Chris Sandford and Saucier knew the extra supplies could be of use to local healthcare professionals. The academy donated gloves, gowns and masks to Deborah Richards, emergency management director of Eastford, and Erica Chrzan, EMS captain of the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, and the town of Union through Fire Chief David Eaton and to Day Kimball Hospital through their donation email
QVCC is donating personal protective equipment and supplies to help frontline workers at Day Kimball Healthcare — disposable gloves and gowns, lab coats, masks, and safety glasses. The supplies come from the science department and certified nursing assistant, medical assisting, medical laboratory technician, and phlebotomy programs which are unable to run lab courses this spring.
“The College is happy to provide our community partner, Day Kimball Healthcare, with the supplies we are unable to use due to the closure of our physical locations,” said Rose R. Ellis, Ph.D, QVCC Campus CEO.
