New hours
BROOKLYN — Effective Sept. 4 office hours at the Northeast District Department of Health (NDDH) will change to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon Fridays.
Many NDDH services, including downloadable forms and the ability to pay online are available 24/7/365 at www.nddh.org.

PUTNAM — Senior Vice Commander Norman Beaupre and Auxiliary President Lorraine LaCroix of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Albert J. Breault Post 1523 Putnam, announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition. Local high school students in public, private, parochial schools or being home-schooled have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Students must write and record a three-to-five minute essay on the selected theme using an audio CD or flash drive and present their recording, typed essay and completed entry form to their local VFW Post by Oct. 31.
The 2018-2019 theme selected is “Why My Vote Matters”. Interested students should contact their schools office and teachers. For info to go:
Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners compete at the District level with the winner advancing to the state competition.
All state first-place winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary and receive their portion of $155,500 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.
Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives.

PUTNAM — As part of this season’s free events, the Town of Putnam is welcoming “Savor the Flavor - Bacon” 2018 food tasting celebration from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at Rotary Park.
“Savor the Flavor- Bacon” 2018 is sponsored by Putnam Business Association and Putnam Recreation Department. The “Savor the Flavor” 2018 event is themed and featuring the special flavor of bacon!
For a $5 donation to Daily Bread food pantry, participants will receive a bracelet and will be able to sample and vote for their favorite restaurant. Attending restaurants participating in this year’s event include: Avah’s, Courthouse, The Crossings, CT National, Stomping Grounds, The Mansion at Bald Hill, Davis Place, Renee’s Working Girl Catering Service, and Henry’s Diner.
