WILLIMANTIC — Nine students from Eastern Connecticut State University participated in a Summer Research Institute that delved into the field of network science. The institute challenged students to perform network analyses of character interactions in a movie, in order to evaluate a hypothesis about the movie’s social structure. Broken into three groups, they analyzed “The Matrix Trilogy,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and Disney’s “Mulan.” Among the participants was Robert Johnson ’20 of Eastford, who majors in political science and mathematics. Johnson’s group analyzed Disney’s “Mulan.” “I created graphs with a software program called Gephi to visualize the data, and I also served as a proofreader of the code. Our research validated our hypothesis, which was that Mulan was, in fact, the most important character.”

WORCESTER — May 12, 2018, several local students received their degrees at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute commencement: William Bourgeois of Woodstock was awarded a bachelor of science degree in actuarial mathematics; Claudia Dufour of Woodstock was awarded a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering with distinction; John McGinn of Pomfret Center, was awarded a bachelor of science degree in actuarial mathematics with high distinction; Michael Paquette of Woodstock was awarded a bachelor of science degree in electrical and computer engineering with high distinction; Zachary Simpson of Putnam was awarded a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering; Shivam Mehta of Chepachet was awarded a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering with high distinction.

WILLIMANTIC — A group of Eastern Connecticut State University students were honored at the annual Environmental Earth Science (EES) Department’s awards ceremony: Jeffrey Fontaine ’18 of Dayville, who majors in Environmental Earth Science, was presented with the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Geomorphology Research Recognition Awards.
