named police
captain
PUTNAM — Police sergeant  Justin Lussier has accepted the position  of captain within the Putnam Police department.
The Putnam Special Service District board made the announcement July 23.
Lussier has been a law enforcement officer with the Putnam Police Department for the past 12 years.
He has held both detective position  and patrol sergeant and brings a strong sense of community policing as well, according to the board.
He currently oversees the day-to-day operation of the Putnam Police Department in an acting capacity in the absence of a chief.
Both Police Chief Rick Hayes and Deputy Chief Lee Konicki have retired.
Lussier will remain  in his acting role until Christopher Ferace assumes the position  of chief.
Lussier lives  in Putnam with  his wife and daughter.

WILLIMANTIC — Eastern Connecticut State University sent 21 biology students to the 72nd Annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference in Ithaca, N.Y. recently. Among the students was Benjamin Rumrill ’18 of Pomfret Center, who majors in niology and presented a research project titled “The Effect of Microgravity on the Growth and Function of Neural Cells.” Rumrill was also awarded for outstanding presentation.

Chosen
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rachel Tassoni of Chepachet has been chosen as the undergraduate delegate for Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Health Sciences and Technology during this year’s commencement and convocation ceremonies May 11-12. Delegates were selected based on their academic standing and will give a speech at their respective college’s graduation service.
Rachel graduates with a bachelor’s in diagnostic medical sonography. She completed clinical rotations in the radiology and antenatal testing departments at Rochester General Hospital and Rochester Regional Health, performing ultrasound exams in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings. Rachel completed an internship at the Rhode Island Department of Health, and studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. At RIT, she was a member of the Honors Program and received the Outstanding Undergraduate Scholarship Award, the Excellence in Student Life Award, and the Legacy Leader Award. She is a recipient of several scholarships including the Alfred L. and Ruby C. Davis Scholarship, the Kathleen M. Keyes Memorial Scholarship, and the Nathaniel Rochester Society Scholarship. Rachel plans to pursue a full-time sonography career in Boston.

WILLIMANTIC — Two local students at Eastern Connecticut State University were inducted into the Delta Mu Delta (DMD) international business administration honor society this spring semester: Jacob Guertin ’19 of Putnam, who majors in business administration; Courtney Olivo ’19 of Danielson, who majors in business administration.
