Gold Squad
raises record
The Woodstock Academy Gold squad raised its record to 20-1 over the course of the week.
The Centaurs took part in both the BABC Invitational in Boston and the HoopHall Invite in Springfield, Mass., and also took on an undefeated MacDuffie School team at home.
The Centaurs came out unscathed.
They finished up the three game, undefeated run with a 97-73 win over St. Andrews.
Tre Mitchell scored 19 points in the win at Springfield College while Joe Kasperszyk added 10.
Ty Perry was just happy to go home to Boston.
“We got some Boston boys on our team (Jakigh Dottin and E.J. Dambreville also hail from the area) and we’re going to have some family out there. It’s going to be a show. There will be a lot of college coaches there so we’re going to go and play hard,” Perry said before going to the BABC Invitational.
He wasn’t kidding about putting on a show.
The Boston native celebrated his return home Jan. 13 with a 52-point effort to lead the Woodstock Academy Gold squad past the Tilton School, 116-90.
Perry was deadly from beyond the arc, making 13 of his 17 3-point attempts.
Dottin added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists while Kasperszyk tossed in 14 points, five assists and five steals.
Perry was just as effective in the Centaurs win over MacDuffie School at the Alumni Fieldhouse Jan. 10.
With the score tied late in the first half, Perry decided it was time to go to work.
Perry hit three of his seven 3-pointers and helped turn a very close game into a one-sided affair as the Woodstock Academy Gold prep team downed previously undefeated MacDuffie School, 112-90.
The score was tied at 44 when Perry began his onslaught.
“It’s something I that I take very seriously. I work on my shot every day and it’s something that I like about my game. I’m going to keep on doing it and keep on getting better,” Perry said.
Perry’s three 3-pointers sparked a 21-2 run for the Gold (18-1).
He finished with 31 points, his most ever in a Woodstock Academy uniform.
Tre Mitchell added 15 in the win.
Blue falls
The Centaurs Blue prep team played only one game last week and saw its seven-game win streak come to an end.
Despite a 19-point effort from Dambreville in his hometown, the Blue squad lost to Tilton School in the BABC Invitational, 92-72, Jan. 14.
Maksim Karvanen added seven points in the loss.
Centaurs boys lose three
The Woodstock Academy boys ran into a very good Waterford team Jan. 12.
The Lancers continued their winning ways with a 95-38 victory over the Centaurs in Waterford.
It was the eighth straight win for the Lancers.
Chase Anderson was the only player in double figures for the Centaurs (1-6, 0-2 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II) with 14 points. Aaron Johnson added five.
Mikey Buscetto led five Waterford players in double figures with 22.
It ended a tough week for The Academy.
The Centaurs tried to come back from a five-point halftime deficit to the Norwich Free Academy Wildcats, but fell just short.
The Wildcats snuck away with a 49-46 win over the Centaurs Jan. 11 at Alumni Fieldhouse.
Johnson and Anderson tried to push the Centaurs over the top in the second half.
Johnson scored nine of his 15 points – all coming on 3-pointers – in the second half while Anderson scored 11 of his 13 points also in the second half.
Cole Hackett was the go-to guy in the first half when he scored 10 of his 12 points.
The Wildcats were able to counter with three players of their own in double figures led by Aidan Miller with 16.
Nik Hay added 11 and Bret Wood 10 as the Wildcats raised their record to 6-0.
The Centaurs put on a furious fourth quarter comeback, but it fell short against the Killingly Redmen, 58-54, Jan. 9.
The Centaurs trailed at the half, but outscored the Redmen 31-27 in the second half to make it close.
The Academy hurt itself from the free throw stripe where the Centaurs made just 10-of-21 while Killingly (5-2, 1-1 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II) made 11-of-12.
Anderson scored 36 points including 25 in the second half and seven 3-pointers.
Aidan Morin and Hackett each had eight rebounds for the Centaurs.
Luke Desaulnier paced Killingly with 22.

For the most part, it was a pretty successful week for the Woodstock Academy girls’ basketball program.
The Centaurs reached the halfway point of the season with a 7-3 record and, at 3-0, own first place in Division II of the Eastern Connecticut Conference after wins over Killingly and Waterford.
“To be in consideration for (the) ECC Division II (title) is a goal that was set by the kids (at the beginning of the season). So, to be in first at the halfway point is amazing. I’m happy for them to have a chance to reach one of their goals,” said Centaurs coach Will Fleeton.
The Centaurs were playing without Aislin Tracey, Mackenzie Eaton, and Ciri Miller at home against the Lancers Jan. 12, but still managed to prevail, 43-33.
Jamie Woods and Heather Converse picked up the slack as both reached double figures. Woods, the team’s leading scorer with a 14.8 point per game average, scored 13 points while Converse added 11.
Woodstock Academy rallied from a 13-7 first quarter deficit to take a 22-21 lead at halftime.
The Centaurs put the game away by outscoring the Lancers (6-4, 2-1 ECC Division II), 18-2, in the third quarter.
After not playing a game for a week, the girls’ basketball team was worried a bit about being a little rusty coming into the Jan. 9 game with rival Killingly.
That wasn’t the case for long. The Centaurs hit five 3-pointers in the first half, raced to a 24-point lead by halftime, and rolled to a 56-22 win over the Redgals at the Alumni Fieldhouse.
“We’re more than capable of knocking down the outside shot,” said Woodstock Academy coach Will Fleeton. “This group is kind of funny- they carry everything together. If a few aren’t making them, then no one is making them. If a few are, everybody is.”
Everybody was making them against the Redgals. The Centaurs finished with seven 3-pointers including three by Mackenzie Eaton who finished with 11 points.
“We hadn’t been shooting as well as we wanted to recently. (Monday), Coach Fleeton was like ‘We’re going to work on our shots and we came out (Tuesday),” Eaton said.
The Centaurs jumped on Killingly early, scoring 15 of the first 20 points.
Just as impressive as their outside shooting was the work done inside especially on the offensive boards.
Jamie Woods scored eight of her game-high 12 points in the first quarter, several on put backs.
“I felt like we could dominate the paint in this game. We try to get the ball in there every game, regardless of the opponent, but I felt like we would win the battle in the paint on both ends of the floor. Downstairs on the board, offensive rebounds is written because I felt like that was something we should be able to get at,” Fleeton said.
The Centaurs also played some shut down defense.
After sprinting to a 35-11 lead at the half, the Centaurs failed to allow the Redgals (3-7, 0-4 ECC Division II) a point in the third quarter.
“It’s a tough week, the schedule keeps getting tighter because of the snow out there. They are all important, they are all big and it’s nice to get a ‘W’ to move on to the next one, maybe we can carry some momentum into that one,” Fleeton said.
The Centaurs did stumble during the course of the week.
They traveled to Norwich Free Academy and lost to the Wildcats Jan. 11 in a low-scoring affair, 39-25.
The third quarter was again the difference maker, only NFA (4-6, 1-1 ECC Division I) was the beneficiary.
The Wildcats outscored the Centaurs, 17-12, in the third quarter after leading at the half, 13-9.
Converse led Woodstock Academy with nine points while Olivia Perry added five. Woods was held to four points in the game.
“Both teams played great defense and it was a real, good battle,” Fleeton said. “NFA is a good team. They just outplayed us in the second half.”
