Students
transported to
Portugal
POMFRET — The Pomfret Community School-PTO whisked students and stfff to Portugal during the recent Cultural Arts Week. It was a week-long, school-wide program.
The students were immersed in the Portuguese culture through classroom visits by docents. These volunteer docents shared crafts, cooking, video presentations and folklore stories of Portugal. The day long Market Place gave students the opportunity to experience the culture firsthand. While Portuguese Fado music filled the school lobby, students made Portuguese Man o’ War paper sun catchers and paper puppets of the legendary Rooster of Barcelos. Rice pudding and Sumol, a favorite beverage in Portugal, were served. The week commenced with a presentation of Portugal: An Adventure in Discovery. This aerial DVD gave a bird’s eye view of the country.
PCS-PTO thanked volunteers: Frank Aleman, Tonya Brock, Joe Costa, Clarinda Ferreira, Miguel Ferreira, Jen Flanagan, Jeannie Heroux, Beth Jacquet, Kristin Lavitt, Kerri Murray, Michelle Pike, Martha Schultz, Marlena Tedisky, Kristie Tyler and Lindsey Verraneault. Pomfret Girl Scout Troop 65500, PCS Art Club, under the direction of Hollis Abram, Cultural Arts Committee Co-Chairs Melanie Ferreira and Michelle McCorkle-Milardo, PTO members Melanie Ferreira, Holly Gadoury, Melissa Keats, Michelle McCorkle-Milardo and Michelle Pike.
Clarinda Ferreira of N. Smithfield, R.I., a native of Mortagua, Portugal and a proud grandparent of three PCS students, single handedly supplied the Market Place with her personal collection of Portuguese items. She spent the day stamping every student’s passport and spent hours the day before helping to prepare the rice pudding, since she was kind enough to share her personal recipe. She also allowed the students authentic and detailed knowledge of the Portuguese culture, the meaning of the items on display and her personal stories.
PUTNAM —Derek Marchione, head coach of the Putnam Science Academy women’s basketball team, announced two additions to the this seasons roster. First was Aislinn Flynn, a 6-foot, 1-inch forward from Long Island where she finished her high school career at Long Island Lutheran. Flynn will be joining PSA as a post-grad.
“Aislinn comes from a very successful and well-coached high school program. Despite missing part of her senior year to injury, she still had a number of offers from Division 1 schools, but wanted time to make sure she found the right fit. This extra year will go a long way towards her development,: he said.
The second addition is Kayla Robinson from St. Anthony (New York). The 5-7 guard is transferring to PSA and will be re-classifying from the Class of 2018 to 2019. This past season, Robinson led the Friars to the CHSAA Championship while earning the MVP honors.
“Kayla is a very talented young lady. Offensively she is a point, but because her ability to shoot it from outside and defend multiple positions, she can slide to the two. Her recruiting has started to pick up lately and I think this is a great move for her,” Marchione said.
PUTNAM — The Lady Mustangs added an inside out duo from New York this week. Coach Derek Marchione announced that Niya Fields (Peekskill HS) and Abigail Robinson (Mount Vernon HS) will be attending Putnam Science Academy this fall. Both currently play with one of the most respected AAU programs out of New York City, the Lady Choz.
Niya Fields, a Class of 2020 guard, comes to PSA after playing varsity at Peekskill High School as both an eighth grader and freshman. The 5-foot, 8-inch point is already catching the attention of power five school and coach Marchione expects that interest to only pick up.
“Niya is a great addition to our program. She easily could have stayed at Peekskill, but she wants to be challenged even more. I think that says a lot about her and that drive will get her where she wants to go.”
Abigail Robinson, a 6-1 post from Mount Vernon High School, will re-classify from the Class of 2019 to 2020. Robinson arrives at PSA as an unfinished product, but with a ton of potential that Marchione thinks will come out sooner rather than later.
“Abigail has all the tools to succeed, it’s just a matter of continuing to work and gaining experience. She will really benefit from having to compete everyday in practice against girls that are not only the same size, but also older. I can’t wait to start working with her.” Marchione said.
