Camp Cutler
PUTNAM — June 19 the Hale YMCA celebrated the opening day of YMCA Camp Cutler with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Hale YMCA and was attended by many local town officials including Putnam Mayor Tony Falzarano, State Senator Mae Flexer and State Representative Danny Rovero. Many of the Hale YMCA’s long time volunteers and board members, including Betty Hale, also attended.
Joining the crowd of more than 50 people were Charlene and James Cutler, wife and son of the late Douglas M. Cutler (1952-2016), for whom the camp is named. Laurence Hale, chair of the YMCA’s Board of Advisors, spoke about the impact Doug had on the Putnam Community and the development of the YMCA. “He was integral in coordinating with the Hale YMCA Board of Directors, local and state officials, builders and utility services to ensure the project was completed in a timely fashion. This Y would not have happened without Doug’s late nights and early mornings.”
Amanda Kelly, executive director of the YMCA, shared how camp came to be named after Doug. “After Doug’s untimely passing, the board began to discuss naming opportunities. Nothing felt just right until the decision to offer summer camp was made on Dec. 1. Doug loved the town of Putnam, loved the outdoors and hiking and loved children. This was the perfect way to honor his legacy with our YMCA.”
Charlene and James cut the ribbon surrounded by people who loved and respected Doug. Charlene spoke fondly, remembering when Doug shared with her that Putnam would be home to a regional community YMCA. There was no question in Doug’s mind; it was not “if” Putnam would have a YMCA, it was “when” Putnam would have a YMCA.
Directly following the ribbon cutting, the YMCA’s Camp Director Adam Lapointe invited attendees to the camp opening with the children. He led the campers in several fun camp songs, followed by raising the new YMCA Camp Cutler flag. Charlene and James were presented with a flag for their family.
Registration is now open for Camp Cutler. For more info, email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Putnam High:
'Give back'
By Linda Lemmon
Town Crier Editor
PUTNAM --- Putnam High School Principal Jacqueline Vetrovec, noting the hours of community service the Class of 2017 have already given, seemed to have no doubt that this is a class that will give back. Class members have given 2,200 in community service, she said.
She gave graduates five pieces of advice including try selflessness, give back, embrace change, use your imagination and creativity, learn to fail and be persistent.
School Superintendent William Hull inspired the graduates with the "Paradoxical Commandments" of Dr. Kent Keith, urging them to do good, succeed, be honest and frank, think big and give the world their best in spite of what the world dishes out.
Awards presented at graduation include: Valedictorian Award: Heather Terron; Salutatorian Award: Andrew Simmons. Educator of the Year: John Peters; Citizen of the Year: Moe Coderre; Student of the Year: Jozzlynn Lewis.
