In girls’ basketball Putnam Science Academy announces the addition of its head coach for the new women’s basketball program. Athletic Director and boy's Head Coach Tom Espinosa said the town of Putnam would like to welcome Derek Marchione, who comes to us from the Georgian Court Division 2 NCAA school where he served as the assistant coach. He is the first girls’ basketball coach in program history. He was a three-year assistant coach for Georgian Court, where he looks to bring his vision to what he wants to do with the program and is excited to get things going here at Putnam Science Academy. Espinosa addressed his welcome to coach Marchione, as he believes that Derek is a rising star in the coaching world and he cannot wait to work with him as a team and welcome him to the coaching staff at the Maple Street Campus. Derek is a native of Waterford, N.Y., where he played varsity basketball for two years. Marchione earned his bachelor’s degree in health sciences from Keene State College in 2013, and will working with the admissions at Putnam Science, the same position he was working in at his previous school, Georgian Court. We look forward to seeing what Derek will bring to the school as well as the community, said Espinosa.

PUTNAM — Putnam Science Academy and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tom Espinosa announced that Nate Patenaude of Smithfield, R.I., committed to joining Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball program for the start of the 2017-2018 season. Patenaude, a 6-foot, 4-inch guard, is coming off a post grad season at PSA. He finished this past season averaging 11.5 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds and one steal. “I am excited to see someone who has worked as hard as Nate to succeed and to move on to the college level. He was very under rated as a high school player and I believe he will develop into a major factor in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference,” said Espinosa.
Cornwall commits
PUTNAM — April 21 Putnam Science Academy guard Jaheam Cornwall committed to play basketball at Gardner Webb next season.
Cornwall has been sensation for the Mustangs since he first stepped foot on the hardwood two years ago. Cornwall has been a starter at the point guard position and has been a huge part of the program’s back-to-back Final Four appearances.
Cornwall’s first year at PSA he led the team with 5 assists per game. Cornwall also averaged 8 points and shot 45% from three. This past season he averaged 12 points, 5 assists and again shot 45% from three. Cornwall left as a starter for the Mustangs with a record of 71-11 in two seasons.
“Jaheam is just a winner, simply as that,” Putnam Science Head Coach Tom Espinosa said. “You knew what you were getting every day from him, never took a day off. We are going to miss him tremendously here at PSA.” Cornwall’s top three schools included Maine and Wagner but ultimately he felt most at home and comfortable with Gardner Webb. The ability to contribute early either as a start or getting meaningful minutes off the bench as a freshman was also a big part of his decision. Ultimately Cornwall wanted to get away from home to have new experiences and meet new people.
