PUTNAM — The Jan. 7 Putnam Lions meeting was more than normal business when the guest speaker was Jan Roberta, CT Quilts of Valor Group coordinator. Quilts of Valor is a national organization run entirely by volunteers. Their goal is to create quilts for veterans so they will feel the warmth, love and gratitude they deserve for their service, sacrifice and valor.
Roberta awarded a Quilt of Valor to Adam Vito, an Air Force veteran who served in Afghanistan. Adam was accompanied by his girlfriend, Kim Penney and their children Michael and Mia Penney as well as Penney’s parents, Jean and Al Dubrowski. The Putnam Lions hosted the award ceremony.
A Quilt of Valor is a generous lap sized quilt awarded at many different levels. Some go to military hospitals where chaplains award them to service members, others may be awarded to entire service units coming back from deployments. They may be awarded in groups or individually. No matter how they are given the impact they deliver is unequivocal.
As of September 2015, there have been over 131,657 Quilts of Valor awarded to service members and veterans.
