PUTNAM — CorePlus Federal Credit Union recently held its sixth “Unsung Heroes Recognition” event on WINY 1350AM Radio’s Morning Show with host Gary O. This popular event has members of the listening audience call in to name an ‘unsung hero’ in their community or someone who may have had a special impact on their life so that that person might receive recognition as an “Unsung Hero”. For every call received, CorePlus then donated $25 towards the local charity of the caller’s choice, in the hero’s name.
Calls came into the station from 7 to 9 a.m. and were answered by members of the CorePlus team: Brooklyn Service Manager Ashley Poe, Putnam Service Manager Elizabeth Zachow, Putnam Assistant Service Manager LisaBeth Adamick, Brooklyn Assistant Service Manager Sarah Cusimano, branch staff Maryssa Blanchette, Sabra Desrosiers, and Director of Marketing, Susan Dombrowski. 122 callers named their unsung heroes, and $3050 total was donated to dozens of local non-profit and charitable organizations.
Each caller was asked to explain why the person named was their hero and then each hero was recognized “on the air” by Nicholas Fortson, president and CEO of CorePlus Credit Union, and host Gary Osbrey. In addition to the names of the “hero’s”, listeners also were told the caller’s name and why the hero was being recognized. All of the stories were truly from the heart, and provided genuine recognition of the many unsung heroes in our community, including veterans, cancer survivors, senior center and food pantry organizers, religious leaders and family members to name a few. CorePlus has donated over $20,500 to local charities over the past six years, honoring close to 800 local heroes.

WOODSTOCK — The Inn at Woodstock Hill raised $3,000 for United Services Center for Autism at its 11th annual Summer Fest.
“The Inn at Woodstock Hill is a strong community partner of United Services,” said Diane L. Manning, president and CEO. “We are grateful to Richard Naumann and his staff for their belief and support in the much-needed Autism services we are providing to the region.”
The event featured a varied and delicious buffet and live entertainment from local favorite Bruce John. A portion of each ticket sale was donated to children’s treatment and supportive programs at the United Services Center for Autism.
This is the fourth year The Inn at Woodstock Hill has donated a portion of its Summer Fest proceeds to the Center for Autism. To date, the event has raised more than $11,000 for local Autism services.
United Services opened the Center for Autism in July of 2012 in response to the significant unmet need for autism services in eastern Connecticut.
The Center’s offerings include comprehensive assessments and gold-standard clinical therapy for people of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorders, complemented by supportive programs. These “wrap-around” support programs include critical social skills training and social thinking groups, tutoring help, vocational training and recreational opportunities for children and adults with autism, as well as classroom consultations and training and support groups for parents, grandparents and siblings.
