POMFRET --- A new tradition began May 29 when Rectory School held its first annual Recycle Regatta - a mix of duct tape, mud and fun.
Headmaster Fred Williams said recycle regattas are popping up lately and he was looking for something fun for the school to do. Parents began dropping off recycled goods and over two Sundays, Williams said, the students built their rafts out of recycled materials. Thirteen rafts competed, although two were disqualified.  Adorned in funky "costumes" stylishly topped off with life vests, the students launched their entries into Rectory Pond and paddled and kicked their way around some buoys.
The winners were: Overall Winner: Major Payne; Best Uniform: Water Rats; Best Team Boat Name: Major Payne; Quickest to Sink: The Toastians; Most Creative: Charlie & the Chocolate Chincillas in Space; Fastest: Scrubinators.
They may have left the shore dry, but most were soaked by the time they made it back to shore. William said the rafts "floated better than anticipated." When the tradition continues, Williams said, more math and science will be worked into the projects. Bottom line: "The kids had a blast."
