NECONN pg 9 10-28-10

NECONN
boys’ U12
soccer team
ties Ellington
Oct. 24 NECONN boys’ U12 soccer team traveled to Ellington and came away with a 2-2 tie.  The first half play was mostly controlled by NECONN.  Great defense by Cal Wilcox, Connor Fillmore, William Liscomb and Max Paro held Ellington scoreless during that stretch.  Starting goalkeeper Chris Walker made a key, early save on an Ellington break, and then he handed off the keeper duty to Alexander Frankhouser for the remainder of the game.
At the 20-minute mark of the first half, the NECONN offense finally got on track.  Elijah Dufour trapped a difficult ball just over the midfield stripe and found David Redfield on an overlap.  Dufour’s ball split the defense, and Redfield was in alone on the Ellington keeper.  Redfield’s shot found nothing but net and put NECONN up 1-0.  Just a minute later, NECONN’s Sam Paul battled mightily for a ball in the middle third of the field and, like Dufour, found David Redfield on another run to goal.  Sam’s pretty pass was right on David’s foot just as he cut past the Ellington defense.  Another blast to the back of the net put NECONN up 2-0 going into the half.
In the second half, Ellington became the aggressor.  They began to take advantage of good field position, creating quality shots on net off restart situations.  Similar to NECONN in the previous period, Ellington scored quick, back-to-back goals right at the midway point in the period.  Their first goal came on a scramble off a corner kick, and the second was scored on a direct kick from the top of the box.  NECONN keeper Alexander Frankhouser had little chance on both goals and kept the team in the game during the waning minutes.
NECONN’s record now stands at 3-4-1, and they will host Coventry at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 on the Pomfret School campus.
