Pomfret 4 Hyde 1
Oct. 20: Dave St. Lawrence led the way with the first hat trick of the year and added an assist. Jack Nicholson added two assists. Matt Bourdeau added the final goal. The goals were very pretty ones and came off some nice plays to the outside. Pomfret had opportunities to score even more in the opening period as both Tim Haggerty and Chris Grandi had opportunities to close. The defense held Hyde at bay despite the tough formation that they threw up against us. We moved Matt back and had Max head up front. This was a nice move as Max hit the outside with speed and drew a penalty shot which just missed as it deflected off the outside of the post and away. The Hyde goal was a tough shot that the player beat two guys in the back and then let fly with a shot from 30 yards out. AJ tried to tip it over the bar but just missed.
Pomfret tried to go long ball to start with and this did not work, as the through ball on the ground was a better choice. Once we turned that corner, the halfbacks created some golden opportunities. Jack Nicholson made some beautiful outside runs and then drew the ball across. Diego Briones and Chris Alves also did the same and helped create their own offense. Marl Kozlowski made the most of his time on the field as he made a really nice give and go with Charlie Gruner in the middle and then banged the ball just wide. Charlie bounced from a sub par game against KO and had some nice plays up the middle.
On the defense it was hard as this was the kind of game where a lot of action happens in the offensive side of the field and then bang—it comes roaring back. Ray Zeek and Evan Hoffman covered the outside very well and Ray got a little dinged up so Brian Lawler came in and put a stop to things himself. Kyle went on several long runs and had some outside shots but also dished the ball well.
The goals were indeed pretty Jack making a nice run down the outside cut to the middle and then put the ball across the six that Dave headed right in. This play was to be repeated on a corner as Jack went far post and Dave was there. Theer were some chances in the air as Chris Alves, Chris Grandi, Tim, and Matt all had headers that just missed.
