Hyde in tourney
WOODSTOCK — Hyde-Woodstock will take part in the 22nd annual James Roman Basketball Tournament Dec. 3 through 5 at the Hyde’s Bath, Maine, campus.
The tourney will feature match-ups between the men’s teams of the Hyde School’s Bath and Woodstock campuses, as well as four other teams: Gould Academy, Hebron Academy, Kent’s Hill, and North Yarmouth Academy.
The tournament is held in memory of James Tomas Roman, a student athlete who passed away suddenly during a pickup game of basketball at Hyde School in February of 1988.
Roman enrolled at Hyde during the summer of 1986. After completing Hyde School’s summer program, the freshman went on to perform at honors level in his academic courses and received the distinguished Headmaster’s Commendation both semesters.
In athletics, Roman, who wore number 14—a number which is now retired at Hyde, was equally hard-working and impressive. He is, in particular, remembered by many for his performance during a game at the Augusta Civic Center during the 1988 Western Maine Class B, C, and D Basketball Tournament in which he fired two straight 15-foot shots that kept Hyde in the game against Valley High School of Bingham. Hyde went on to win in overtime 80-78.
This year’s tournament will start with a ceremony dedicated to Roman and his jersey will be saluted and remarks will be made by Hyde administrators.
