Pomfret 5 Groton 2
Dec. 18: A hat-trick by Connor Quinn ’11 powered Pomfret to its third victory in less than 48 hours, and the Griffins closed out the Lawrence/Groton Holiday Tournament in fine style. Groton got on the board 3:50 into the first period, and it took Pomfret until 9:53 of the second period to even the score. Quinn ripped a shot on a textbook offensive zone face-off that sliced down into the net after hitting the crossbar. The third period began with Pomfret shorthanded, but strong penalty-killing kept Groton at bay. Billy Beirnes ’12 gave Pomfret the lead at 5:10 on another well-executed offensive zone face-off and a sweet give-and-go with Teddy Driscoll ’11. Just when Pomfret seemed to be on a roll, Groton bounced back into the game just over a minute later after a net-front turnover. Quinn then scored two goals in a four-minute span – the first on a patient forehand-to-backhand move – both of which were assisted by Evan Hoffman ’11 and Ray Zeek ’11. Captain Danny Palumbo ’11 rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 31 seconds remaining in the game. Nick Ellis ‘ 13 had 27 saves. The team’s record is now 5-2-1.

Dec. 17: Maybe we were tired, maybe we were just mentally spent from what was a long weekend, nonetheless we played our worst game of the tournament weekend. The first half was marred by poor defense, however despite our poor play we only trailed by 4 at the half.
Though we upped our effort after the second half we did all the things that has haunted us all season. We paused the ball on offense, we passively turned the ball over (we only had 6 Assists for the entire game, 1 in the second half) and we complained about every call or non-call of the officials. With 9 juniors and seniors on our team, we have to show more leadership on the court.
