PUTNAM --- Putnam Science Academy students took first and second in the 2011 Connecticut Science Fair and are now headed to the International Sustainable World-Energy, Engineering, Environment Project International Project Olympiad to be held in May in Houston. The academy won a total of seven trophies, nine medals and four special awards. First place in Physical Sciences (teams) went to the team of Yusuf Yilmaz, Abdurrahman Cam (Silver Medalist of 2010 ISWEEEP Olympiad) and Fadil Sencan, and second Place Award in Life Sciences (teams) was awarded to the team of Selahaddin Ozkan, Fehmi Agaoglu and Ozkan Cil from the academy. Also, the team of Y. Yilmaz, A. Cam and F. Sencan qualified to the Finals of ISWEEEP (International Sustainable World – Energy, Engineering, Environment Project) International Project Olympiad.They will represent Connecticut and the U.S.
Besides that, Serik Tukupov won 2nd Place Award in Mathematics Category.
Last year, PSA won 1st and 2nd Places in Physical Sciences Category (Major) in the State Science Fair Finals. Before that, PSA had 2nd Place Awards from the years 2008 and 2006. PSA also attended ISWEEEP International Project Olympiad in 2008 and 2010 and had won Bronze and Silver Medals, respectively.
Science Academy students won trophies in both of the major categories at once. This is a first in academy history.
Serdar Haytiyev, Chemistry Teacher and Project Supervisor said "Because of our students’ success in the Science Fair last year, there has been a quite anticipation from our students this year too. I am proud that they showed the same success again."
The List of Award Winning Students, their grade levels, Names of the Projects and the list of Awards:
1. Yusuf Yilmaz, Fadil Sencan and Abdurrahman Cam (12th): “Using Citrus Fruit Peels to Remove Toxic Phenol from Industrial Wastewater,” Advanced to Finals in Major Physical Sciences Category, advances to Olympiad in Houston; * Physical Sciences Category – High School Teams (Major Category): 1st Place – Trophy and $500 cash; * Stockholm Junior Water Prize – Certificate, possible advance to national competition; * Membership to CT Science Center in Hartford;.
2. Ozkan Cil (12th), Selahaddin Ozkan, Fehmi Agaoglu (11th): “Utilizing Autumn Foliage as an Alternative Energy Source and as an Absorbing Agent for Oil Spills,” Advanced to Finals in 3 different categories at once: * Life Sciences Category – High School Teams (Major Category): 2nd Place – Trophy and $300 cash; * Alternative/Renewable Energy Category: Finalist Medal and Acrylic Award (top 10); * Biotechnology Category: Finalist Medal and Acrylic Award (top 10); * Air and Waste Management Association Award - $100 Check; * Year Pass to CT Science Center in Hartford.
3. Serik Tukupov (10th): “Improving the Efficiency of Robotic Arm Movement through Advanced Geometric Calculations,”; Advanced to Finals in 2 different categories at once: * Mathematics Category: 2nd Place – Trophy and $400 cash; * Applied Technology Category: Finalist Medal and Acrylic Award (top 10); * Society of Engineers – Hartford Section Award; 4. Selman F. Avci and Almas Myrzatay (9th): “Measuring the Effects of Microwave Radiation on Plant Growth and Germination via experiments on Phaseolus Lunatus”; * Biotechnology Category: Finalist Medal and Acrylic Award (top 10)
5. Abdul Bektas, Yusuf Eraslan and Alperen Tuzuner (11th):  “Enhancing the Plant Growth and Reducing the Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Using Single Mode Fiber Optics to Transmit Sunlight,”; * Northeast Utilities: Environmental Management Award - $250 Scholarship.
