Today's the day for the opening of the Putnam Farmers' Market. It's settled in the Riverview Marketplace off Kennedy Drive.
The Northeast Connecticut Farmers Market opens on Thursdays, starting May 5.  It runs from 3:30 to 6 p.m. On June 13, the farmers' market will also be open on Mondays. Another local farmers' market, in Danielson, will open from 9 a.m. to noon starting June 11 at the Killingly Library.
The farmers markets started in 1980, according to the group's website, as a Saturday morning event. It's now expanded to include more than vegetables. Locally produced products including soap, marinated mushrooms, woven items and much more are offered.
Taking part this year, to start with, will be Betsy's Stand in Sterling, with vegetables, fruit and flowers; Duhamel Gardens of Woodstock, vegetables, fruit, flowers; Fabyan Sugar Shack; Falls Creek Farm of Oneco, vegetables, fruit, flowers, baked goods; Meadowstone Farm of Brooklyn with goat cheese, hard cheese, soaps and lotions; New Boston Beef of N.
