PUTNAM --- Official were very pleased with the results last year at the first annual Drug Take Back Day when 130 pounds of unwanted, expired and unused medications were turned in.
But the second annual event, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Putnam Police Department and Putnam PRIDE April 30 did even better, pulling in 162 pounds.
Romeo Blackmar, Putnam PRIDE coordinator, said the Community Prevention and Addiction Services (CPAS) group was a partner in the event and PRIDE had seven volunteers at the Riverview Farmers Marketplace pavilion. Joining Blackmar were: Cherie Poirier, PRIDE member-Drug Turn Back coordinator; Doug Cutler, PRIDE director/town administrator; Miranda Nagel, CPAS-director of Prevention Services and PRIDE member; John Fournier, CPAS-Prevention specialist and PRIDE member; Al LaFleur, Elks Drug Awareness Program-Regional Representative; Doug Hubbard Putnam resident/volunteer.
Putnam Police Officer Kyle Maheu represented the Putnam Police Department and Jack Hennesey was the DEA representative on site.
Blackmar said six boxes provided by the DEA were filled during the four-hour event.
He said 93 vehicles and one person walked up with unwanted drugs.
He added Brooklyn had the only other collection site serving the 10- town area and collected two boxes of medications (weight was unavailable).
