PUTNAM --- Town officials have set a June 15 town meeting and a June 23 referendum vote for residents on the proposed donation of property to be used for the Quinebaug Regional Tech Park.
Last week the Planning Commission and the Board of Finance each approved the offer by Wheelabrator of Putnam to donate about 66 acres to the town. The town meeting and referendum would authorize the town to accept the donation and then authorize the town to donate 15 acres of that property to the Greater Hartford YMCA for its proposed regional YMCA.
In addition, according to Town Administrator Douglas M. Cutler, the town would receive from the state, 150 feet of state land on the east side of the Quinebaug River to be used for a proposed bridge and access road.
Cutler said the property, across from where Exit 95 from I-395 feeds into Kennedy Drive, is part of the town's Plan of Conservation and Development. The Exit 95 area shows as a growth area and has been a long-term goal for economic development.
The town already has $2.97 million for the design and construction of a new bridge almost straight across from the Exit 95 S ramp. Currently traffic crosses the river using a one-lane bridge closer to downtown .
