Lady Clippers
still in the
'champ' hunt
PUTNAM --- In the first time since 2004, the Putnam High School Lady Clippers softball team will head for the state tournaments this week.
East Granby, 16th seed, will take on the 17th-seed Clippers and the winner of this matchup will play the number-one seed and defending Class S champions, Terryville, June 1.
In the first round of the CSC tournament last week, the Lady Clippers lost to Cheney Tech 15-1. The Clippers started out with runners in scoring position but couldn’t get them in, said coach Steve Smith. "We had the bases loaded and runners on second and third twice, we just couldn’t score."
Errors also cost the Lady Clippers who made seven of them. The lone run was scored when Kaylee Shippee 2-3 hit a single to center scoring Megan Heaney.
"We battled for a few innings but Cheney Tech is a very good team that can really hit the ball," said Smith.
