PUTNAM ---  State Representative Danny Rovero (D-Putnam, Killingly, Thompson) honored the Putnam Science Academy (PSA) on the floor of the House Chamber with a citation for their recent victories at the 2011 International Sustainable World Energy Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEP) and the Connecticut Science Fair.
PSA students won top spots in the physical and life science categories at the Connecticut Science Fair and three gold medals at I-SWEEP while representing Connecticut against 70 countries and 43 states in Houston.
“We need to encourage our children in the areas of science and math,” said Rep. Rovero.  “I’m so proud of these Putnam students.”
I-SWEEP is an international science fair open to every high school student around the world and is the largest science event of its kind.   The contest creates an educational platform for young researchers to present their innovative projects to take on today’s challenges in energy, engineering and environment.
Three students from PSA, Yusuf Yilmaz, Abdurrahman Cam and Fadil Sencan, had successfully represented Connecticut and the USA in 2011-International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, and Environment) Project Olympiad known as ISWEEEP.
This was the first time PSA students won Gold Medal in an International Olympiad in the school’s history.
Before this, PSA had won Bronze Medal in 2008-ISWEEEP and Silver Medal in 2010-ISWEEEP.
The name of their project was “Using Citrus Fruit Peels to Remove Toxic Phenol from Industrial Wastewater”.
In the afternoon, the group was invited to State Senate Chamber. In the beginning of the session, State Senator Donald E. Williams Jr. gave a speech to recognize the success of Putnam Science Academy students.
He said, “Recently, three students from Putnam Science Academy represented our state in 2011-International Sustainable World, Energy, Engineering, Environment Project Olympiad and won Gold Medals. It is my honor to host those winners in our State Senate.”
