Spoiled Food
The town of Putnam placed a roll-off dumpster at the former Armory Sept. 3 for residents to dump their spoiled food in the wake of Irene. With one hour of collection to go, only 12 people had brought in bagged-up spoiled food.

"It'll take a long time to clean up," said Putnam Public Works Director Jerry Beausoleil.
By the third week of September, he estimated, residents should hear the sound of the town's chipper coming through, munching up all the downed branches that cover residents' properties.
Putnam is nearly back online after the combined efforts of CL&P, town workers and tree workers from Michigan.
Beausoleil said tree workers from Michigan were assigned by CL&P to Putnam and they've spent days going from one blocked road to another, clearing the roads so CL&P crews can follow and restore electricity.
Downed trees have been cut into big chunks, moved off the road and the crews have carried on down the road. After the roads are open, Beausoleil said, crews will go back and clean up the large debris.
"Then we will be systemically going through town with the chipper" for all those downed branches dotting the town. "We'll be at it for a long time," he said. He estimated it would take four or five weeks to complete the cleanup.
