PUTNAM --- Putnam High School is hosting the 12th annual Clipper Invitational Marching Band Festival Sept. 17 at the St. Marie Greenhalgh Sports Complex off Wicker Street.
The invitational will feature six schools from Connecticut and Massachusetts and the gates open at 5 p.m. The contest begins at 6.
Admission is $5; and free for kids age 10 and younger.
Jennifer Lombardo, president of the Putnam Music Association, said "Come join us for a night of amazing musical talent as area high school marching bands come together to perform and compete in the 12th Annual Clipper Invitational Marching Band Festival. The Clipper Invitational is one of the oldest marching band competitions in northeast Connecticut. This year’s Invitational will feature six neighboring marching bands from Killingly, Plainfield, Putnam, Norwich Shephard Hill and Rockville."
She added, "The music and routines are sure to enchant and delight audience members of all ages! Each band performs an array of music, marching, color guard routine and more- a visual spectacular!"
The event is held rain or shine and is a major fund-raiser to support music programs in Putnam schools. The event includes a full concession stand offering a variety of foods such as: pizza, burgers, fries, popcorn, cotton candy and beverages. In addition, there will be a bake sale, a 50-50 raffle, a music quilt raffle, face painting and a variety of music vendors.
This event is managed by more than 80 volunteers.
 from the community who participate in a variety of activities to make the show a success, Lombardo said. These activities include car and bus parking, admissions, raffles, bake sale, hospitality, concessions, bus greeters and escorts, runners and announcers.
"This event is a true community effort including over five hundred students and staff from competing schools who work enthusiastically to bring an evening rich with music and energy to Putnam’s Quiet Corner," she added.
