POMFRET --- It was a glorious morning at the new Connecticut Audubon Society's Lois Orswell Grasslands Bird Conservation Center as supporters and volunteers joyfully welcomed the new building to the Bafflin Sanctuary, officially.
The ribbon cutting made it official Oct. 8, but the spacious 5,000-square foot education center was pressed into service in the summer. The 1895 barn that stood in the same space was beyond restoration but parts of the barn were salvaged and worked into the soaring center.
Ben Williams told those gathered that the center couldn't be any more appropriate to the setting in the 700-plus acre Bafflin Sanctuary and couldn't be any more gorgeous.
Connecticut Audubon officials reminded those attending the ribbon-cutting that grasslands are one of the "most endangered" habitats and this site preserves and manages the grasslands.
State representative Mike Alberts, reading a citation from the General Assembly, said visitors will be educated and inspired for many generations to come.
