PUTNAM — The Putnam Special Services District, which is primarily responsible for overseeing the operation of the police and fire departments, will welcome a pair of new members to its board during the January 2012 meeting.
Democrat Kathleen Zamagni and Republican Doug Taylor were elected to the Board at the November municipal elections. Zamagni and Taylor, both newcomers to politics, replace veteran Special Services District members James Shaw and Christopher Coderre.
Both new members expressed similar thoughts when it came to their goals on the Board.
“I plan to listen and keep an open
mind about issues. I’m prepared to ask questions whenever there’s something I need to know,” said Zamagni.
“As a new person on the Board I have no preconceived opinions. I’m open to learning what’s going on in the District and making an informed decision when necessary,” said Taylor. Zamagni, who has a bachelor’s from Worcester State University and a master’s from UConn, is a retired school who worked at the Thompson Middle School for 35 years. Since her retirement she’s been working as a substitute teacher in Putnam and Thompson. She’s also spent time in a volunteer capacity at Daily Bread and most recently for the Connecticut Education Association Retired on its Legislative Committee. “Although I’m new to town politics, I’m familiar with the workings of politics. Both my parents were involved in town government in Massachusetts,” said Zamagni.
Taylor, who’s been a resident off and on since 1979, is a graduate of Bel Air, (Md.) High School and Hartford County Community College, also in Maryland. He’s been employed as the director of Materials Management at Foxwoods Resort Casino for the last 20 years.
Active in the Living Faith United Methodist Church, Taylor serves on the church council and as the chairman of the organization’s finance committee and co-chairman of the audit committee. “I’m looking forward to serving my community on the Special Services Board,” said Taylor.
As part of the orientation to their new position Taylor and Zamagni are scheduled to tour the Police and Fire Departments.
