Dec. 16: Girls Varsity basketball defeated Andover by a score of 51 to 43 in the first round of the Rivers holiday tournament. For the first time this season the girls displayed consistent team chemistry, holding Andover to only 17 points in the first 16 minutes of play. Meg Gaudreau hit four first half 3s , Joddie Iyalekhue knocked down two key baskets while Juliette Lawless pulled down 7 rebounds and scored 8 points. Momentum was on Pomfret’s side, but this quickly changed at the start of the second half as Andover went on a small run, closing the gap to just 4 points with a little over 3 minutes remaining. Alyson Chase came up huge down the stretch with a couple of clutch rebounds and steals, inspiring her teammates in the closing minutes of play. Team defense put an end to Andover’s run, and Taylor McVey increased the lead to 6 on a breakaway layup. In the final minute of play Pomfret pulled out an 8 point lead.

Dec. 17: After a big win against Andover the night before, the girls were a bit bruised but excited to take on rivals, Rivers School, in the Championship game of the tournament. Player for player, we knew our team would be outmatched in terms of size, especially with Whitney Willingham still sidelined with an ankle sprain, and it would take a a real team effort to contain them offensively. The first half was a back and forth battle as Pomfret took the early lead. The girls struggled to execute the offenses cleanly, but Meg Gaudreau came up big, scoring all 11 of her points in these opening 16 minutes. Alyson Chase and Juliette Lawless showed toughness, driving the paint against girls much bigger and taller, and each got to the foul line four times. Meg Calderado worked well to contain Rivers’ captain, holding her to only two baskets during this time. However, Rivers eventually found their rhythm, capitalizing well on outside shooting opportunities against Pomfret’s 2-3 zone. Pomfret dug deep and regained its confidence in the final minutes of the half, containing Rivers scoring while putting some points on the board, closing the gap to 10 at the half. Freshman Kailey Cox was a nice spark in these minutes, grabbing an offensive rebound and getting to the foul line (Kailey finished 3-4 from the foul line).
In the second half, Pomfret showed its inexperience, committing 10 turnovers against Rivers’ 1-2-2 extended zone trap. Though the girls had broken this trap in the first half, they struggled in the second, and scoring opportunities were limited at best. Gaudreau was well defended – Rivers did not allow her an outside look – and all points came from drives in the paint and trips to the foul line. It was a quick eight minutes, but that was all it took for Rivers to capitalize on Pomfret’s mistakes, and the gap increased to 20+. Rivers continued to trap, but in the final seven minutes Pomfret regained some composure, and finished the game with the same heart and hustle that defined the opening minutes of play. In the final play, freshman Cassie Hayward picked the opponent’s pocket and drove the entire length of the court only to be fouled and head to the line for two shots. Not a bad way to end. Final score: Pomfret 38 – River 71.
Both Meg Gaudreau and Juliette Lawless were recognized for the All-Tournament team.

Pomfret 1 Williston 0
Dec. 10: The Griffins had their first real test at home against the strong Williston Northampton team. The first period was a little lopsided as the Griffins had to weather the storm in their end. Goalie Kristy Brown (aka KG), kept her team in the game and bought them the time to regain composure for a stronger second period. Excellent defensive play from Alex Gerew and Moira MacArthur allowed our forward lines to produce continued pressure in the offensive end. Amanda Kewer, Vicki Geary and Abby Horst executed a perfect 3 v2 in the second, yet were stopped by a determined Williston goalie. The team broke for the third period noting that their final period would have to be their best. The forwards peppered the goalie with shots at every opportunity until finally, Jordan Lipson took a pass from Moira MacArthur and buried a shot high for the team’s only goal of the game. Williston came back flying, but the team stuck together and were too much of a force for Williston to get past.
