THOMPSON — The 2011-2012 edition of the Marianapolis women’s basketball team was the most successful ever in the more than 80 year history of the Thompson school.
The team posted a sparkling 22-4 record and won the NEPSAC Class C Championship.  In the past four years, Marianapolis women’s basketball posted an 81-19 record.  Those 81 victories are more than the combined wins in women’s basketball on The Hill in the 37 years since the program was founded.
In the 1960’s the powerful New York Yankees boasted of the M & M Boys, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris.  The 2011-2012 Marianapolis women’s team had its own version, the M & M Girls, Melanie Mills and Sara Morrow.
Much of the recent credit for the success of the program can be attributed to this pair of seniors who have been varsity performers for four years.  Mills and Morrow, the Lady Knights co-captains, were honored by the Marianapolis/Trinity Foundation Board of Trustees at its quarterly meeting March 26.
“This duo is the embodiment of the term student/athlete.  They provided senior leadership not only on the basketball court but also in the classroom,” said Head of School Joseph Hanrahan.
Mills is leaving the Thompson prep school as the leading scorer in the school’s history with 1,347 points.  She’s also taking along numerous accolades including, tournament Most Valuable Player in the NEPSAC and Suffield tournaments.  She was also selected as a SENE Prep School First Team All-Star.  Mills also participated as a valued member of the Marianapolis volleyball team in the fall.
Mills, who is the daughter of Don and Cindy Mills of Woodstock, is headed to Trinity College in September where she will major in biology as a pre-med student.  Mills will also be a member of the Bantams women’s basketball team.
Morrow, who is the daughter of Kathy and Bill Morrow of Woodstock, is headed to either UConn or Bowdoin College in the fall, where she plans to enter either school’s Pharmacy program.  A national Honor Society student, she leaves the basketball program with 540 points and recognition as the team’s defensive specialist.  Morrow has also been an integral part of the Lady Knights cross country and softball squads.
Both young ladies indicated that coach Charles Baron had a huge influence on their lives, on and off the court.  They also commended the Marianapolis faculty for its support, not only in the classroom but also by its attendance at games.
“These two young ladies provided the leadership and poise to our program that without a doubt will carry on for years to come.  They will be sorely missed on campus,” said coach Baron.
Winning the first NEPSAC title in the history of the school is something everyone at Marianapolis is proud of.  Remembering the M & M Girls, Mills and Morrow for the intangibles they provided will be part of Marianapolis history that will be talked about for many years into the future.
