Pomfret
lacrosse
team still
undefeated
On April 30, the Pomfret Youth Senior “B” Lacrosse team hosted the Senior “B” team from Somers and upended them by the score of 11-1. This game shows just how much the team has developed, for Somers is the one team that had tied Pomfret earlier in the season. Jonathan Hummer would be the goalie of record, keeping his undefeated streak alive.
The Pomfret squad would score early and often as they tallied four first-period goals. Evan Cunningham would win the initial faceoff and pass off to Max Paro who would find Tucker Johns cutting from behind the net to notch the first goal just 20 seconds into the game. Johns would get his second of the day four minutes later on a nice dodge-and-shoot. On the next shift, Cal Wilcox would find Robert Totten open for the team’s third goal of the period, and Paro would close out the quarter with a nice bounce-shot goal, assisted by Cahan Quinn.
The only score recorded in the second quarter was and unassisted goal by Tucker Johns with just seconds left on the clock. The defensive unit of Josh Bernier, Conor Quinn and Mason Defocy was aggressive and dominant throughout the stanza, denying Somers any quality looks at the goal. Also contributing valuable minutes in the first half were Chapin Cheney, Jake Phaneuf and Jake Mueller.
In the third quarter, Evan Cunningham would score immediately off the face-off when he developed a nice give-and-go with Tucker Johns. Cunningham would again win the ensuing face-off and dish the ball to Cahan Quinn who would put the home team up by the score of 7-0. Somers scored their lone goal of the game at the seven-minute mark, but Pomfret’s Chris Rovero would get that one back with an unassisted goal right before the end of the quarter. Showing good ball control at the attack position that period were attackmen Zach Gagnon, Lex Bosio, William Liscomb and Johnny Currie.
In the fourth, Rovero notched his second of the contest off a Max Paro assist, and then Cuinn Stevenson and Robert Totten would close out the game with unassisted tallies to make the final score 11-1. Though not finding their name in the scoring column, midfielders Kyle Prouty, Isaiah Price, Ryan Black and Sam Paul were outstanding all afternoon as they played strong defense, picked up ground-balls and created easy transitions up field.
