More wins
for Pomfret
lacrosse
The Pomfret Senior “B” Youth Lacrosse team managed two more regular season wins this past week with a 7-5 victory over Ellington’s Senior “A” team and a 7-1 win over Tolland’s Senior “B” squad and then went two for three at the Paul Bowers Tournament in Somers.
Against Ellington, Pomfret jumped out to a 5-2 half time lead and maintained control throughout the game. Goal scorers were Tucker Johns, Cris Rovero and Evan Cunningham each with two, and Robert Totten chipped in one for the 7-5 victory.
In the Tolland game, Totten would get the team rolling on an unassisted, man-up goal three minutes into the game. Chis Rovero would then make an end-to-end rush from his defensive position just minutes later to give the team a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Nice midfield play by Sam Paul, Isaiah Price and William Liscomb made it difficult for Tolland to mount much of an offense. In the second quarter, Evan Cunningham would record two unassisted goals, and Tucker Johns would close out the half on a nice tally from a Cahan Quinn assist.
Neither team would score in the third quarter, but Robert Totten would get his second of the day in the fourth off a nice spin move around his defender. Tolland would finally get on the scoreboard when they were able to create a fast break opportunity that goalie Jonathan Hummer had no chance at saving. Max Paro would close out the scoring on a nice give-and-go move with Tucker Johns just before the clock ran down. Credit the defense with another strong game as Jake Phaneuf, Josh Bernier, Conor Quinn and Cris Rovero were outstanding all afternoon.
At the Paul Bowers Memorial Sportsmanship Tournament in Somers, Pomfret took on teams from Glastonbury, Ellington and West Hartford in the one-day, round robin format and came away with a record of 2-1.
Against Glastonbury, the Pomfret squad came out flat and proceeded to spot Glastonbury a three to nothing lead. Mainly through the efforts of attackman Tucker Johns, the team would slowly creep back into the game. Tucker would score three straight goals to even up the score with about two minutes left in the game. The second of his goals was a nice man-up opportunity in which Cris Rovero would record the assist. With just under a minute in the game, Pomfret would receive another man-up opportunity, and right before the final whistle Rovero would get the game winner on a very athletic dodge and shoot. Midfielders Jonathan Hummer, Robert Totten, Chapin Cheney and Sam Paul did a nice job maintaining possession of the ball, and goalie Conor Quinn came up big when he need to for his first victory of the afternoon.
Against Ellington, the opposite of the Glastonbury game happened when the team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. The first goal came on a Max Paro to Evan Cunningham tally, and immediately after that, Evan would feed Tucker Johns to put the team in the lead. During that run, attackmen Cuinn Stevenson, Bruce Dexter, Lex Bosio, Zach Gagnon and Cahan Quinn did a nice job moving the ball and creating space for good cuts to the net. After that, though, the offense went dry and the defense had to pick up the slack. When Ellington would score at about the midway point of the game, defensemen Jake Mueller, Josh Bernier, Jake Phaneuf and Mason Defocy upped their level of play. Conor Quinn was called upon to make numerous big saves, and the team hung on for a well deserved 2-1 victory.
In the last game of the afternoon, West Hartford wasted no time in getting on the board. Before Pomfret knew what hit them, they were down 4-0. Midfielders William Liscomb, Isaiah Price, Johnny Currie and Kyle Prouty worked hard to get the ball into the Pomfret end of the field and slowly the momentum turned. Evan Cunningham would give the team life when he scored two unassisted goals off nice faceoff moves, but West Hartford would come right back with one of their own to make the score 5-2. Pomfret would fight back again when Tucker Johns found Max Paro cutting to the crease. Max’s goal would inch the score to 5-3, but that would be the last highlight of the afternoon as West Hartford would eventually take home the win by the score of 7-3.
Pomfret has posted a 14-2-1 regular season record and is now placed in the top bracket of the post season tournament. They opened the quarterfinal round on the road in Longmeadow, Mass., June 5. It was a single elimination tournament of which the Pomfret squad was champions last spring.
